Nintendo discusses the future of the Nintendo 3DS hardware

Nintendo discusses the future of the Nintendo 3DS Hardware

Nintendo recently had a corporate financial results briefing and they discussed many topics. In one section they mentioned the Nintendo 3DS hardware and the futue for that hardware. The information below is from a PDF document they made public from this briefing.

Next, I will discuss the status of Nintendo 3DS.

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

This graph shows changes in Nintendo 3DS hardware sell-through, as a total for the Japanese, US, and European markets combined. Although sales are trending lower than last year, the results from our seventh holiday season sales have maintained stable levels. As explained during the financial results briefing in October of last year, the Nintendo 3DS family of hardware has continued to sell steadily without significant fall-off, even after the release of Nintendo Switch.

FullSizeRender.jpg

This graph shows Nintendo 3DS software sell- through figures for 2017 compared against the two previous years. Overall totals for 2017 were down compared to 2016 when Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon had globally intense sales levels, but exceeded 2015 in the US and European markets.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Let's turn to the future prospects for the Nintendo 3DS family business.

FullSizeRender.jpg

The Nintendo 3DS characteristics, price points, and play styles differ from Nintendo Switch, and we intend to continue the Nintendo 3DS business separately and in parallel. We will continue to use its installed base and rich software library in our business.

FullSizeRender.jpg

These figures represent the total number of units shipped worldwide for key Nintendo 3DS titles. The numbers in the red boxes represent the number of units shipped during the fiscal year ending March 2018 alone. Shipment volume has increased this year even for several titles that were released some time ago.

Note: The number of units shipped for Animal Crossing: New Leaf includes units sold as Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome amiibo.

FullSizeRender.jpg

This graph shows the percentage of 2017 first-party software sell-through comprised by software released in or before 2016, broken out by region. It will give you a sense of how robust our current software lineup is.

FullSizeRender.jpg

A multitude of titles across a wide variety of genres have been released for Nintendo 3DS, creating one of the strongest lineups ever. We are, of course, continuing to develop new software, but we believe it is important to leverage the rich library of Nintendo 3DS series titles to drive sales with Nintendo 3DS owners, as well as consumers who recently purchased Nintendo 3DS hardware.

FullSizeRender.jpg

The affordability of the Nintendo 3DS family of systems places it in a critical position as the first dedicated video game platform for children who have no prior experience with dedicated video game systems. It is also positioned as an affordable product for budget-conscious consumers. We will continue working to promote Nintendo 3DS to these consumers.

Master the Power of the White Chronicle and Repair Time!

Unlock the time traveling power of the White Chronicle once again in Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology. This beloved classic is an expanded from the original Nintendo 3DS™ game and contains a great deal of added gameplay/story content, updated presentation, and new ways to experience the adventure!

The continent of Vainqueur is plagued with the spreading desertification, laying the land to waste by turning it slowly into sand. Tensions rise, and war breaks out for the remaining fertile land. Stocke, a Special Intelligence agent of Alistel, is sent on a special mission when he discovers the powers of the relic, the White Chronicle. With his new-found abilities, Stocke will need to right the wrongs of the past in order to prevent the total annihilation of the world. In this version, a new, mysterious character named Nemesia teaches him about the world's history and unlocks a third timeline to explore the ripple effect of some of his actions with episodic "what-if" scenarios.

With redesigned character art, new character voice-overs, music from the original composer Yoko Shimomura, and additional difficulty settings, Radiant Historia: Perfect Chronology will enhance the experience in this fresh take of a beloved story. This title also features both the classic original and an exhilarating new story through Perfect and Append modes. Append mode allows you to beat the original game before having the option to start a New Game+ with the added content, while Perfect mode lets you play through the game with the inclusion of the new content from the beginning.

Fans who can’t get enough Pokémon can also download the classic 2D Game Boy Color game Pokémon Crystal when it launches in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS on Jan. 26 for only $9.99. The game, an expanded version of the popular Pokémon Gold and Pokémon Silver games, was the first in the Pokémon franchise to allow players to choose between a boy or girl playable character, and was the first game to introduce animations during Pokémon battles. The Nintendo 3DS version of the game is updated with wireless battling and trading, and is compatible with the Pokémon Bank app (annual service charge applies). Pokémon Crystal is now available for pre-purchase in Nintendo eShop on Nintendo 3DS.
