Production of Nintendo 3DS has been Discontinued

Production of Nintendo 3DS has been Discontinued

3DS-Production-discontinued.JPG

Via Nintendo’s Japanese website the announcement has been made that the production of the Nintendo 3DS has been discontinued. The image above is from Google Translate website .

This information was not mentioned via press release or any other official announcement from Nintendo.

What does this mean ?

Essentially the 3DS family of systems ( New 3DS / New 2DS / 2DS , 3DS XL ) is no longer being manufactured by Nintendo. We assume this also applies to other regions of the world. You might be able to find new systems in stores now ( September 21st 2020) but the hardware will not be replaced once all the previously manufactured systems have been shipped out and bought by consumers. This may take a few weeks or months to totally sell out of the new product. It just depends on supply and demand of individual markets.

What about 3DS online gaming and the 3DS E-Shop ?

Currently (September 21st 2020) Nintendo is still supporting the e-shop so you can still download digital software. You can currently play 3DS games online via Nintendo’s online services. Currently we don’t know when the e-shop will close or when the online services will end. Nintendo previously announced the Nintendo DSi discontinuation date and gave everyone several months to prepare for the conclusion of online services for the system. Nintendo gave everyone very specific final dates to make final video game purchases and to play games online. Nintendo is expected to announce the discontinuation date of online services in the near future (probably next year ).

In a statement to gamesindustry.biz Nintendo said the following :

“We currently have no plans to end any existing online services for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Online play and Nintendo eShop will continue to be available and it will be possible to access and redownload all previously purchased content in the foreseeable future.”

( Source )

Of course they would say that. This statement isn’t surprising because they would want to announce this on their own schedule. Simply put the 3DS e-shop and online services can’t go on indefintelty and sometime in the future it will end.

Why is this happening ?

The Nintendo 3DS was originally released in 2011. The New Nintendo 3DS released in 2015. In recent sales data the Nintendo 3DS has decreased 88% while the Nintendo Switch has increased 11.1%.

The Nintendo 3DS family of systems (including 2DS XL, 2DS, New 3DS, 3DS, 3DS XL) is no longer doing well enough to justify continued production. 3DS’s time has passed and Nintendo is moving on.

With this news I expect the Nintendo 3DS family of systems to continue to loose digital game support. The Nintendo 3DS still occasionally gets new game releases each week but the amount of games have slowed to a trickle. The Nintendo 3DS has given players around the world many excellent video games that can be played in 3D and 2D. This day was inventible but yet I am still sad to hear this new.

Sungrand Studios will release Silver Falls for New Nintendo 3DS December 26th 2019-Updated

Sungrand Studios will release Silver Falls for New Nintendo 3DS December 26th 2019-Updated

Silver Falls 3 Down Stars will be releasing December 26th 2019 in the US and January 9th in Europe for the New Nintendo 3DS / New 2DS XL platforms. This will be an eshop exclusive game and will be playable in 3D and 2D.

“ Silver Falls – 3 Down Stars

Strange lights have been appearing in the night sky above Silver Falls. When three mysterious objects fall from the sky, this secluded, sleepy town becomes frozen in a moment in time. Strange radiation has turned local wildlife bloodthirsty. Only 3 people in Silver Falls seem to be unaffected. Holt, a composer mourning the death of his grandfather with a fishing trip, Analise, an organizer for the annual Moose Steak Festival, and Moss, the local sheriff investigating reports of strange lights in the sky, must work together to figure out exactly what is going wrong in their town. Why are they being attacked by wildlife? Why has time seem to have stopped? Using their wits and resources scavenged around Silver Falls, these three survivors must discover the mystery behind the three objects and return their town to normal.”

Update December 26th 2019:

The Director of Sungrand has provided me a press release update with new information on the game that was supposed to be released today in the US. The press release is below :

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the 3DS e-Shop page for Silver Falls – 3 Down Stars has not gone live on December 26, the launch date of title. While Nintendo advised us of this release date, I feel I have disappointed our supporters and gamers around the world who have been awaiting the launch of this game. Due to relevant departments closing for the holiday season, my team and I will be unable to receive the necessary support to resolve this issue. For a small, independent game development team, it is a great challenge to earn credibility and respect from the gaming industry and community. We understand this unfortunate outcome of our game’s launch day does not paint our studio in a positive light, but we still accept responsibility for this.

To this end, we have set up an Ambassador Program, which is available to US Residences (and other North American regions). By signing up for this Ambassador Program, players who were looking forward to playing the game on December 26 but were disappointed will be entitled to the following (including but not limited to):

  • Early Access to 2 Exclusive Character Alternate Outfits (otherwise unobtainable in-game)

  • Early Access to 1 Exclusive Special Weapon (otherwise unobtainable in-game)

  • 1 Free digital copy of an upcoming Silver Falls game title (to be determined by our team and announced at a later date)

More details and an entry form can be found at http://silverfallsgame.com/ambassador

We are deeply sorry for the disappointment we have caused and hope those gamers we have let down will accept our Silver Falls Ambassador Program as an apology.

Thank you

Jerrel Dulay

Director of Silver Falls Development Team
