Fantastic Beasts The Crimes of Grindelwald

3D Movie Review

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was made for 3D. Scene after scene I was impressed by the 3D visuals. The movie opens with a scene that amazed me both because of the excellent action and the excellent 3D visuals. 3D depth is used in smart ways to highlight height in many key scenes. Several creatures will pop out of the screen in fun ways. Even in scenes with dialog the camera zooms into the character faces which makes it easier to see the emotional range of the actors. I watched this movie in a Regal RPX screen. This was my first experience with this technology and I walked away impressed. The 3D visuals looked fantastic even in darkly lit scenes. Bravo to Regal cinemas ! This is one of the best 3D presentations for 2018.  I can easily recommend watching this movie in 3D, especially in the RPX format.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

I was lukewarm on the first Fantastic Beasts movie. I really enjoyed the Harry Potter film franchise but I wasn’t sure about this series . This second movie changed that sentiment. I feel like this movie is superior to its predecessor in almost every way.

This movie follows Newt Scamander a few months after the events of the first movie. This movie is fairly self-contained and it quickly recaps the story from the original . Most of the main characters from the original return in this movie. The movie has many noteworthy characters such as Grindelwald and Dumbledore. Grindelwald is portrayed by Johnny Depp and he is a fantastic villain. Grindelwald is a charismatic fascist who wants to take over the world and unite the wizardly world. I adore this performance by Johnny Depp in this movie. Jude Law portrays a young Dumbledore and he is also fantastic in this role. Jude Law is charming , confident and is very likeable as a young Dumbledore. All in all this movie is fun,  action packed and is very entertaining.

Sadly this movie has many problems . The biggest issue is with the story telling . The narrative is a mess. Tones shift quickly from wacky to serious. It’s easy to get lost in the story and loose track of what is going on. The movie has a large cast of characters. I like all the performances but the sheer amount of characters on screen is little bit too much to handle. This movie is a sloppy good time.

The movie is a visual treat. The fantastical beasts return in this movie and they look wonderful and are well realized on screen. The computer graphics and special effects are stellar. How the human characters react to the computer graphic beasts is well done and is believable. Newt Scamander feels very comfortable with the animals and it shows on scene.

The movie is a little long but I was intrigued from beginning to end. The great action scenes break up some of the dull middle act. This movie has a little bit of everything with action, adventure, and even some romance.

I feel more confident about this Fantastic Beasts franchise after watching this movie. The movie has its problems , but I enjoyed my time with it.

Final Verdict: 7/10

The Grinch (2018) 3D Movie Review

The Grinch (2018)

3D Movie Review

Written By: Jake Jarvis

3D

The 3D presentation for this movie is quite good. The 3D highlights many fine details like animal fur and snow flurries in the air. Some visual gags look incredible in 3D. One example of this is a fun scene with a licking reindeer. The distinctive ‘Dr. Suess style’ of scenery really pops in 3D. The 3D really makes the character designs standout and come to life. Overall the 3D presentation for this movie is very impressive and is something that I can easily recommended.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

This Grinch movie is the third adapted version of classic Dr. Suess book. This version is enjoyable but doesn’t quite match the quality of the classic 1966 Chuck Jones original. This version is quadrillion times better than the Ron Howard live action film starring Jim Carrey.

This version of The Grinch is a modern holiday classic. I went into this film, expecting a disaster, and I was stunned by the quality of this movie. This Grinch movie fleshes out the story with several additional new characters. The addition of family and friends for Cindy Lou Who, as well as a few animal friends for Max, (The Grinch's faithful dog) is a welcomed change. The humor in this movie works well and resembles the 1966 original with some slapstick and sight gags that would have made Chuck Jones proud. The 90-minute run time flies by and left you wanting more. Perhaps the success of this movie can inspire them to remake of The Grinch Halloween special ? Benedict Cumberbatch was an inspired choice to voice the character of the Grinch. Even more surprising was that Cumberbatch chose an American accent for Grinch instead of a riff on Karloff's British one. I didn’t care much for the new version of The Grinch song. I did enjoy some of the other new songs and how they integrated some of the older songs into this new movie. In this movie the Grinch wasn't so much an evil being, but a damaged soul in need of kindness and forgiveness. During troubled times this is provides a great lesson for kids of all ages.

The Grinch (2018) movie is a great movie that the entire family can enjoy.

Final Verdict: 8/10

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms 3D Movie Review

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

3D Movie Review

Written By: Jake Jarvis

3D

The 3D conversion for this movie is fairly well done. The ballet and waltzing scenes look stunning in 3D. The end credits look very nice in 3D. The 3D depth is pretty good and works well for this kind of movie. The 3D in this movie is better than most other action/ adventure movies. The cinematography really lends itself to the 3D visuals. The film does not have any pop outs or cutout effects here; it does have lots of rounded depth. I enjoyed the nice snowy 3D effects. In some of the holiday scenes the Christmas trees were totally flat, which is very disappointing. If you must watch this movie, then I can easily recommend watching it in 3D.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is loosely inspired by the original 1812 story. The original 1812 story was later adapted into the 1892 ballet. Now that the nutcracker story is part of the public domain, any film studio can make a movie out of this classic tale. Clearly Disney has no love for the original source material because this movie is a poorly made cash grab.

So instead of a remake of the original Nutcracker with Disney cartoon characters or whatever, they opted for a semi sequel to the original story. Instead of a musical this is an action/adventure movie. Sadly this movie feels like the awful combination of two other Disney movies: Alice In Wonderland and the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. If you saw Disney's/Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, you essentially already watched this movie. This movie has over the top costumes and visuals to make up for the bad acting and poorly executed story telling.  Just change out the CGI characters of Lewis Carroll's creations with the Nutcracker characters and stock action/adventure/fantasy tropes and you essentially got this pathetic excuse for a movie. This movie doesn’t feel new or original in any way. Five minutes in, you will have everything figured out, even though this bears next to no resemblance to the original Nutcracker story. The plot twists might surprise small children. That being said I wouldn’t recommend this movie for small children. The character of the mouse king is very creepy. Mother Ginger and the steam-punk inspired sets might be too overwhelming for the little ones. For an action/adventure film, there is a good deal of exposition dumping. The story telling never feels natural and often you are told the story and not shown the story. I never thought I'd ever say this, but this movie needed more music and dancing. Not just a short snippet of a performance that literally stops the movie dead in its tracks. The 100-minute run time feels like a Netflix binge and not a full movie.

I cannot recommend this movie. Save yourself the money and watch one of the literally hundreds of other previously made versions of The Nutcracker instead. There is even a Nutcracker movie already available on 3D blu-ray. If you want to see the ballet in 3D , go see the Wim Wenders' Pina documentary instead. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a forgettable movie that simply isn’t worth your time or money.

Final Verdict: 4/10
