Mortal Engines 3D Movie Review

3D

This movie could have been stunning in 3D, but sadly it’s mediocre. Depth is not used effectively with too many cardboard effect scenes. It just don’t look natural in 3D. The visuals in this movie are fantastic, unfortunately that doesn’t translate well over to the 3D aspect. Sadly this movie is a poor 3D conversation, and it should have been filmed in 3D. The 3D in this movie is disappointing , pathetic and it cannot be recommended.

Final Verdict:

Weak 3D 2D Recommended

Movie

Mortal Engines is an adaption of the young adult novel of the same name written by Philip Reeves. This film is directed by long time Peter Jackson collaborator, Christian Rivers, but advertising for this film heavily implies Peter Jackson is the director. Peter Jackson is NOT the director of this film. The movie showcases a breath-taking world that is a real feast for the eyes. The story takes place in the deep future several centuries after the events of a mysterious world war. Unfortunately, the plot and the narrative don’t hold a candle to the amazing visuals. This movie is great in theory but in reality it’s a real slough. It doesn't help that the two main protagonists, Hester Shaw (Hera Hilmer) and Tom Natsworthy (Robert Sheehan) don't have an ounce of charisma between them. I haven't seen leads this dull and unlikeable since Disney's John Carter. I found myself rooting for the villain Thaddeus Valentine simply because he was the most charismatic character in the entire film. Only Stephen Lang's portrayal of Shrike and Jihae's Anna Fang really held a candle to Hugo Weaving's turn as Valentine. The movie is way too long, twenty minutes shorter and a tighter narrative might have helped overcome some of the other shortcomings.

Mortal Engines is an interesting premise but is only an okay film.

Final Verdict: 5/10
