The Nutcracker and the Four Realms 3D Movie Review

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

3D Movie Review

The 3D conversion for this movie is fairly well done. The ballet and waltzing scenes look stunning in 3D. The end credits look very nice in 3D. The 3D depth is pretty good and works well for this kind of movie. The 3D in this movie is better than most other action/ adventure movies. The cinematography really lends itself to the 3D visuals. The film does not have any pop outs or cutout effects here; it does have lots of rounded depth. I enjoyed the nice snowy 3D effects. In some of the holiday scenes the Christmas trees were totally flat, which is very disappointing. If you must watch this movie, then I can easily recommend watching it in 3D.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is loosely inspired by the original 1812 story. The original 1812 story was later adapted into the 1892 ballet. Now that the nutcracker story is part of the public domain, any film studio can make a movie out of this classic tale. Clearly Disney has no love for the original source material because this movie is a poorly made cash grab.

So instead of a remake of the original Nutcracker with Disney cartoon characters or whatever, they opted for a semi sequel to the original story. Instead of a musical this is an action/adventure movie. Sadly this movie feels like the awful combination of two other Disney movies: Alice In Wonderland and the Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. If you saw Disney's/Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, you essentially already watched this movie. This movie has over the top costumes and visuals to make up for the bad acting and poorly executed story telling.  Just change out the CGI characters of Lewis Carroll's creations with the Nutcracker characters and stock action/adventure/fantasy tropes and you essentially got this pathetic excuse for a movie. This movie doesn’t feel new or original in any way. Five minutes in, you will have everything figured out, even though this bears next to no resemblance to the original Nutcracker story. The plot twists might surprise small children. That being said I wouldn’t recommend this movie for small children. The character of the mouse king is very creepy. Mother Ginger and the steam-punk inspired sets might be too overwhelming for the little ones. For an action/adventure film, there is a good deal of exposition dumping. The story telling never feels natural and often you are told the story and not shown the story. I never thought I'd ever say this, but this movie needed more music and dancing. Not just a short snippet of a performance that literally stops the movie dead in its tracks. The 100-minute run time feels like a Netflix binge and not a full movie.

I cannot recommend this movie. Save yourself the money and watch one of the literally hundreds of other previously made versions of The Nutcracker instead. There is even a Nutcracker movie already available on 3D blu-ray. If you want to see the ballet in 3D , go see the Wim Wenders' Pina documentary instead. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is a forgettable movie that simply isn’t worth your time or money.

Final Verdict: 4/10

Venom 3D Movie Review

Venom 3D Movie Review

Written By: Adolph Vega

3D

I watched this movie in IMAX 3D and I walked away very disappointed. The 3D was barely present in a majority of the scenes. One motorcycle action scene made good use of 3D with objects flying in and out of the screen. Visually the movie is shot in many darkly lit locations. 3D and darkly lit scenes don’t work well together.  3D depth is occasionally used in this movie but it’s mostly forgotten. The 3D is a non-factor in almost 60% of the movie. Simply put the 3D isn’t worthwhile for this movie, and I can’t recommend it.

Final Verdict: Weak 3D 2D Recommended

Movie

Venom is a unique comic book movie. It has elements of horror but isn’t scary, it has some humor but it isn’t a comedy, it doesn’t know what it wants to be.

The story of Venom begins with Eddie Brock who is an investigative reporter.

In this movie Eddie Brock is investigating the “Life foundation”. The life foundation has many secrets and is one very powerful company. During a secret investigation Eddie merges with an alien species named Venom and his life is forever changed.

In this movie Tom Hardy portrays Eddie Brock. Tom hardy is a British actor who is portraying an American character. I didn’t like the character of Eddie Brock and found Hardy’s “American accent” to be distracting and awful. It’s difficult to enjoy a movie when you don’t like the main character. Tom hardy is a fantastic actor but is wrong for this role.

The biggest problem with this movie is the writing. Cringe worthy is the best way to describe the dialogue in this movie. Was the script for this movie written by a thirteen-year-old high school drop out? All the characters are one dimensional and poorly written. The only likeable character is that of Anne Weying. Michelle Williams plays Anne in a charming and semi realistic manner. The movie is riddled with plot holes. So many elements of the story don’t make any sense. The characters spew exposition to you in an obvious manner.

Another major problem I had with the movie was with the action sequences. How Venom fights enemies is interesting but it’s poorly shot. Bad camera angles and choppy editing ruin the many action sequences.

The movie has a few positives that keep its from being a total train wreck. The movie is entertaining and I was never bored. The character of Venom is likeable and I did like the voice.  Some of the action scenes were fun (when you could see them).  The bad aspects clearly outnumber the good elements and makes for a pretty bad movie.

Sadly this Venom movie is a mess of a movie and I cannot recommend it.

Final Verdict: 4/10

Alpha 3D Movie Review

Alpha 3D Movie Review

Written By: Adolph Vega

3D

Alpha is a gorgeous movie that was made for 3D. The movie uses depth to a fantastic degree. A large cliff is a major location within the movie and the 3D depth really highlights the sense of height in those scenes. The 3D visuals create a more immersive experience as it feels like you in the movie with the characters. Snowy scenes use multiple layers of 3D and give you a sense that you are in the snowstorm with the characters. Overall the 3D visuals look sharp and vivid. The movie uses pop out 3D in fun and smart ways that compliment the action sequences within the movie. The 3D isn’t perfect; I had some issues with darkly lit scenes and ghosting double images. This movie is made for bigger format cinemas like IMAX because of all the huge locations. I watched it in IMAX 3D and I easily recommend watching it in that format. You really need to watch this movie in 3D; it’s a great example of how to implement 3D in an immersive way that only adds to enjoyment of the movie.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

Alpha is a gem of a movie. Alpha tells the tale of how humanity domesticated wolves into dogs. The movie takes place in Europe about 20,000 years ago. You mainly follow the character of Keda a young man who is isolated from his family and friends. The story for this movie is fairly simplistic as you watch Keda befriend a wolf and attempt to return to his home. The movie is mostly a solo affair. I found this adventure to be compelling and a fascinating tale of prehistoric survival. The domestication of wolves into dogs might be the main hook for the movie, but it also handles the bigger themes of loyalty, compassion, and love. The movie looks beautiful, and is a Instagram dream come true. The visuals, cinematography and locations all look stunning. The movie feels authentic and realistic. As I watched this movie I felt like I was transported back in time to the prehistoric world. The editing is the only real issue with the film. The movie starts with an exciting hunt that pauses midway to showcase a flashback. This flashback showcases the backstory and characters before the hunt. The rest of the movie is fairly linear, so why does it start in such an unexpected fashion? The movie would be stronger if it didn’t do the flashback and just showed the scenes naturally as they occurred. The movie feels a little long and some scenes in the final act feel redundant and unnecessary. The animal training for this movie is superb. This is a fantastic movie that I found compelling and fascinating from beginning to end.

Overall I really loved this movie. Before wrapping up this review I have to thank my patrons on Patreon for providing me the funding to watch this excellent movie. This movie really moved me. The story is simplistic but it feels heart felt. Alpha is a fantastic film, and is easily one of my favorite movies of 2018.

Final Verdict: 9/10
