Jumanji The Next Level
3D Movie Review

The 3D in Jumanji: The Next Level is well done. There are several scenes with really good pop outs . One scene involving a rope and a blimp really pops in 3D. The 3D really adds visual interest to the desert scenes with lots of depth to the sand dunes. In the mountain scenes the snow flurries look very nice in 3D. The 3D never amazed me but it is enjoyable enough to recommend.

Final Verdict:Good 3D

Movie

If you liked JUMANJI: Welcome to the Jungle , you'll probably like JUMANJI: The Next Level as well.

This film sticks to the basics that made Into the Jungle such a surprise hit. This movie continues the story set up in the previous Jumanji movie. However this movie mixes things up with some fun additions to the cast. Danny Devito plays Grandpa Eddie and Danny Glover plays Milo Walker. The plot is essentially a enhanced remix of the original movie. To summarize the story several different people are sucked into the haunted video game Jumanji. These people must work together and survive this ridiculous video game. This time Eddie and Milo also get sucked into the game along with some of the characters from the original movie. In this movie they are searching for their friend Spencer who is trapped in the game. There are a few surprise characters that mix things up in a very delightful way. This movie doubles down on the excellent character banter and situational comedy of its predecessor. This movie is just like a video game in that it ups the stakes and makes each level harder and harder. The jokes are mostly LOL funny . Not all the jokes work but the few that aren't good will still put a smile on your face. Stick around for the mid credits scene, that sets up a potential third movie.

Overall Jumanji The Next Level is a very enjoyable movie.

Final Verdict: 8/10

Frozen 2 3D Movie Review

Frozen 2 3D Movie Review

Written By: Krista Strom

3D

Frozen 2 is what every 3D animated movie should be. Honestly, I never watched the original Frozen in 3D, so I cannot conclusively state if Frozen 2 is an improvement over the original, but I will assume that it is. Frozen 2 liberally uses both positive and negative 3D space. Disney has previously struggled with "bland" 3D, but this film is the definitive example that Disney actually knows how to present a beautiful 3D animated experience. During one moment in the movie I witnessed at least one person in the audience reach out and try to "catch" a 3D snowflake in their hand. Even during normal dialogue scenes the 3D looks very good. Where the 3D really shines is during the two major Elsa scenes:  “Into the Unknown” and “Show Yourself”. Each of these scenes make creative use of Elsa's ice powers, resulting in a breathtaking display of stylistic animation that really shines in 3D. At certain points, it almost feels like you are watching a live dance performance combined with a light show. The 3D is not perfect. One small complaint is how the foreground and background appear in a few scenes. The foreground is CG, and the background appears to be a painted matte. This is not a huge deal because after a certain distance your brain cannot interpret the difference between something that is flat and something that isn't, but the slight differences in art style did annoy me. I highly doubt that many people would even notice this minor visual flaw. The 3D character models can also look slightly off in some scenes and this can become distracting. Overall this superb level of artistic and technical 3D quality. This is what I will expect from Disney in the future. If they give us anything less than this, they will be cheating us. Frozen 2 looks wonderful in 3D and I highly recommend it.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

Frozen 2 is an impressive sequel.

In Frozen 2, Elsa literally hears the call to adventure. At first, she refuses to answer this call because she's already had an adventure. Elsa likes her current life and doesn’t want things to change. Ultimately the pull is just too strong and Elsa starts a new adventure of self discovery and learns more about her parents and her powers. This story has a major twist in it, but it doesn’t really feel like a twist. This plot twist is unexpected, but is not unearned. What Disney has managed to do here is to take a character’s internal journey and map it onto the external world in the form of a quest. This is not a quest that she just incidentally happens to be on, this is a quest that happens directly because of her character and who she is. I think this could be a great example of the heroine’s journey and how it is fundamentally different from the traditional hero’s journey. The main plot line is touching and great but the subplots on the other hand are not fully formed. For example, Olaf's subplot is not given any real conclusion. I found Olaf to be rather annoying in this movie. Furthermore the Olaf and Kristoff songs aren’t very funny - they just derail the pacing of the movie. I don't think it's an issue with either of the songs per se, but the way they were handled in the movie. Ultimately the Frozen lore is deepened, but it also made many more unresolved questions.

Overall I loved Frozen 2 and I enjoyed it more than the original movie.  How  this movie handles Elsa’s trauma is well done but far from perfect. This  movie is aimed for kids but handles some deeper themes that I think adults will enjoy and learn from even more so than other previous Disney movies.

Final Verdict: 9/10 , Editors Choice Film Award

Maleficent Mistress of Evil 3D Movie Review

Maleficent Mistress of Evil 3D Movie Review

Written By: Adolph Vega

3D

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil looks absolutely gorgeous in 3D ! The film begins in a scene in the forest where the camera pans and zooms in and around this location. The 3D gives the viewer a real sense of being in this magical setting. This movie has excellent 3D depth, great pop out and you have a wonderful diorama effect. Disney does not disappoint with the 3D in Maleficent Mistress Of Evil. The 3D helps to make the characters look more lifelike and realistic. Maleficent is a prime example of this with many parts of her head existing in different aspects of 3D space. The movie has many excellent perspective shots that look fantastic in 3D. Long corridors go far into the distance, and fairies pop out of the screen. The film has many darkly lit scenes and the 3D in these scenes looks fantastic (your experience may vary depending on your cinema). The film is bookended with excellent 3D scenes. The final action scene looks wonderful in 3D as different things are flying in and out of the screen and 3D depth is used in smart ways. In closing this movie was made to be seen in 3D. I suspect that future film schools may use this movie as an example of how to do effective and enjoyable 3D. The 3D probably helped me enjoy this movie more than if I watched it in 2D. Absolutely without any hesitation I give this movie my highest 3D rating and full and complete recommendation.

Final Verdict: Great 3D , Editors Choice Award

Movie

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is the sequel to the 2014 Maleficent Disney film. Maleficent was a twisted retailing of the Sleeping Beauty story. The original Maleficent movie ended essentially where Sleeping Beauty ended so this sequel covers new ground , but does it justify its own existence ?

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil takes place five years after the original. Don’t worry if you don’t remember the first movie because this movie will recap that storyline in this movie. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) is now engaged to be married to Prince Phillip and Maleficent isn’t too happy. Prince Phillip’s family is also hesitant of this marriage. Via a series of unfortunate events Maleficent and her kind declare war on Prince Phillip’s kingdom. Will Phillip and Aurora get married ? Can humans and magical creatures live in peace and harmony with each other ? Watch this movie to find out.

Sadly Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is a mediocre movie. The motivations for the characters are basic and its all rather predictable. Angelina Jolie as Maleficent is the only character with any kind of personality. The rest of the characters are as bland as an unbuttered biscuit. Overall the acting is pretty bad in this movie. The film is filled with one note basic characters. The middle of this movie is slow and boring. I was intrigued by the aspect of more Dark Feys (winged demon looking creatures like Maleficent) but this plot point is paper thin and is only somewhat developed. This movie is a thinly veiled allegory for overcoming prejudice. Don’t worry this movie doesn’t feel overly preachy. The story has many frivolous scenes that are made to “look cool” but don’t make sense when you think about it. This movie is filled with obvious plot holes and many unresolved questions. The computer generated creatures look obviously fake and don’t have a real presence on screen. Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is a sloppy mess of a movie.

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is not a great movie, yet it’s greater than the sum of its parts. This is a big dumb movie but I enjoyed it. Even if the magical creatures look totally fake they are still cute and enduring. This is totally a guilty pleasure kind of movie. Don’t take this movie seriously and you will probably have a good time.

In closing Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is bad movie that I actually liked. If you liked the first Maleficent movie you will probably enjoy this movie too.

Final Verdict: 6/10
