3Dor2D Rating System

Each review will have two sections to describe both the 3D element, and the quality of the specific subject matter itself (movie, video game, etc). Each section is independent from one another.

A bad movie might have excellent 3D, and a wonderful movie might have awful 3D. We kept both sections independent to be as fair as possible to both elements of each review. For your convenience both sections of the review will be on the same page.

In the actual reviews the first section will be the 3D section and subject matter (movie, video game, etc) will be second. On this page we flipped the order since the section regarding the quality of the subject matter itself is more strait forward to understand.

Review Section 1/2:

Quality of the Subject Matter Itself

(Movie, Video Game, Etc)

3Dor2D.com reviews use a simple numerical 1~10 scale .

With the number 1 being the lowest possible score , and 10 being the highest possible score.

  • 1/10 = Terrible

  • 5/10 = Okay

  • 10/10 = Amazing

The review scores will NOT have decimals or fractions, they will only be whole numbers. Therefore scores like 7.9 , 4¼ , etc will not be possible on 3Dor2D.com.

Here are reviews that correspond to each number of the 1-10 scale:

Review Section 2/2:

Quality Of The 3D Aspect

Regarding 3D movies 3Dor2D.com believes that 3D conversion can make wonderful 3D visuals. 3D Movies do not have to be natively shot in 3D to receive high praise. We would prefer that all 3D movies be shot in 3D , but under the right circumstances converted 3D can look fantastic. For example the 2018 documentary They Shall Not Grow Old. This movie was post converted from footage filmed over 100 years ago and it looks fantastic in 3D. Just because a movie is natively filmed in 3D that does not automatically equate to it having a higher quality 3D either. The quality of 3D is based on how visually interesting and enjoyable the 3D is, and it all depends on how they use 3D. 3D visuals can make something more enjoyable, or make it less enjoyable depending on the quality presented.

Your 3D experience may vary depending on your local cinema. Our reviews and your theatrical experience may not necessarily be in sync and that is okay.

Sadly not all cinemas portray 3D equally, and we have no idea if a specific theatre is having an off day. Maybe the theater you visited has not properly adjusted / calibrated / maintained their equipment. Maybe the theater we visited just upgraded their equipment and the 3D experience is wonderful. We don’t believe that any cinema company is inherently better than any other cinema company in how they present 3D. We have no idea if one specific theater location is better than another close by theater location from the same cinema company.

Unfortunately you are never guaranteed a wonderful bright and gorgeous 3D experience when you go to the cinema. Excellent 3D is not even guaranteed in premium theaters like IMAX, Regal RTX , Cinemark XD, Dolby Cinema , etc .If you have a seriously awful 3D experience please contact your local theaters management, and politely but firmly ask for a refund.

All that being said it might not be the fault of the individual theater if you have a bad 3D experience. Not all movie studios take the same amount of time, staff or have proper budgets to make awesome 3D visuals. Maybe the theater had technical issues when you went to see the movie, and maybe it was the 3D conversion itself that was awful because it was rushed. We never really know why you or why we might have a subpar 3D experience in the theaters. Sadly it is what it is.

Our editors do their best to give you an accurate description of their individual experiences that they had when they went to their theater for their reviews. Our reviews are subjective and even if we watch the same movie, in the same theaters, at the same time we may still have different opinions than yourself regarding the execution of the 3D visuals. Ultimately your 3D experience may vary drastically from our 3D experience.

3Dor2D.com will use the following graphics for the 3D sections of the reviews .

Please note on January 1st 2019 the 3D rating system graphics have been overhauled. Any reviews after January 1st 2019 will reflect the new style, and any reviews before January 1st 2019 will reflect the older graphics style . This newer art style below was done by Ppeppermind. GREAT 3D

This icon signals truly worthwhile 3D. The 3D quality is sharp with rich visuals that dramatically enhances the movie or game experience. The 3D visuals are really impressive. and worthwhile. Great 3D includes but is not limited to using different layers of 3D in smart, fun, and interesting ways. Great 3D can be pop out based or depth based. The 3D element was clearly created for this movie or video game and is not an after thought. The 3D element can be gimmicky or silly but if it truly enhances the visuals than it can receive a great 3D rating . This is a strong recommendation.

Two examples of Great 3D:

GOOD 3D

This icon will be used in reviews that have well done 3D . 3D is not needed to enjoy this movie or video game but it is a nice addition. Good 3D visuals may not always be consistent or visually impressive. Whomever made the 3D visuals clearly tried to make worthwhile 3D, but weren't able to achieve greatness. This is a mild recommendation.

WEAK 3D 2D RECOMMENDED

This icon will be used in reviews when the 3D visuals are awful and/or not handled well. The visuals maybe are too dark or too blurry due to the 3D effect. 2D is the preferable way to enjoy this entertainment.  It may have some good or great scenes or moments of 3D but overall the 3D just isn't worth while and it cannot be recommended to anyone. Maybe the 3D visuals are simply lackluster and are uninspired in their execution. In the first few years (2014-2019) of the website this rating was called Terrible 3D. We changed this rating in 2019 to be Weak 3D 2D Recommended to be more professional sounding and to be more decent.

3Dor2D.com will also use Special Awards in reviews to Highlight Excellence.

Editors Choice 3D Award

This award will be used when the 3D aspect is beyond GREAT and is something truly special. This 3D is amazing and should be an exemplar. This award can be given to either a 3D movie or to a 3DS video game.

This is the highest 3D recommendation that can be given within a review.

Two examples of Editors Choice 3D:

Editors Choice Movie Award

This award will be used for a movie that is truly amazing and is a MUST WATCH. This award does not equal perfection, it only states that the editor strongly recommends this movie because it is something truly special.

Two examples of Editors Choice Movies:

Editors Choice Video Game Award

This award will be used for a video game that is truly amazing and is a MUST PLAY. This award does not equate perfection or the highest score, it only states that the editor strongly recommends this specific video game because it’s truly special.

An example of video game that has earned an Editors Choice Award is Shovel Knight, you can read the review for that video game here.

3Dor2d.com reserves the right to update and/or change ratings for its previously posted reviews at any time for any reason.

If a review score is changed we will state what the previous score was and what the new score will be after the change. Maybe a video game is updated and it plays better. Maybe a movie is rewatched and the reviewer feels differently about it. Whatever the reason we have the flexibility to change to our review ratings. We try not to change our review ratings often but it has happened in the past ( Mission Impossible Fallout & Citizens of Earth) and it can happen in the future. 3D review scores will not be influenced by compensation of any kind.
