Alpha is a gorgeous movie that was made for 3D. The movie uses depth to a fantastic degree. A large cliff is a major location within the movie and the 3D depth really highlights the sense of height in those scenes. The 3D visuals create a more immersive experience as it feels like you in the movie with the characters. Snowy scenes use multiple layers of 3D and give you a sense that you are in the snowstorm with the characters. Overall the 3D visuals look sharp and vivid. The movie uses pop out 3D in fun and smart ways that compliment the action sequences within the movie. The 3D isn’t perfect; I had some issues with darkly lit scenes and ghosting double images. This movie is made for bigger format cinemas like IMAX because of all the huge locations. I watched it in IMAX 3D and I easily recommend watching it in that format. You really need to watch this movie in 3D; it’s a great example of how to implement 3D in an immersive way that only adds to enjoyment of the movie.

Alpha is a gem of a movie. Alpha tells the tale of how humanity domesticated wolves into dogs. The movie takes place in Europe about 20,000 years ago. You mainly follow the character of Keda a young man who is isolated from his family and friends. The story for this movie is fairly simplistic as you watch Keda befriend a wolf and attempt to return to his home. The movie is mostly a solo affair. I found this adventure to be compelling and a fascinating tale of prehistoric survival. The domestication of wolves into dogs might be the main hook for the movie, but it also handles the bigger themes of loyalty, compassion, and love. The movie looks beautiful, and is a Instagram dream come true. The visuals, cinematography and locations all look stunning. The movie feels authentic and realistic. As I watched this movie I felt like I was transported back in time to the prehistoric world. The editing is the only real issue with the film. The movie starts with an exciting hunt that pauses midway to showcase a flashback. This flashback showcases the backstory and characters before the hunt. The rest of the movie is fairly linear, so why does it start in such an unexpected fashion? The movie would be stronger if it didn’t do the flashback and just showed the scenes naturally as they occurred. The movie feels a little long and some scenes in the final act feel redundant and unnecessary. The animal training for this movie is superb. This is a fantastic movie that I found compelling and fascinating from beginning to end.

Overall I really loved this movie. Before wrapping up this review I have to thank my patrons on Patreon for providing me the funding to watch this excellent movie. This movie really moved me. The story is simplistic but it feels heart felt. Alpha is a fantastic film, and is easily one of my favorite movies of 2018.

Mediocre is the best word to describe the 3D in this movie. The movie has many underwater shots that appear rather murky in 3D. Sometimes you will see water bubbles in 3D that do look nice. Sadly the 3D effects are almost non-existent for many parts of the movie. When the 3D is visible it has a good amount of depth, but little is done with it. There are a few occasional scenes with pop-out 3D and one epic failed pop-out moment during the beach scene. Overall the 3D has its moments but not enough to warrant the extra expense of a 3D ticket.

Final Verdict: Weak 3D 2D Recommended

Movie

Every couple of years, Hollywood unleashes yet another shark movie. They tend to be silly like JAWS 3D or DEEP BLUE SEA or suspenseful like the original JAWS or THE SHALLOWS. THE MEG can't decide which lane its in and fails to be silly or suspenseful. This movie had all the ingredients to be a hybrid of the two shark film tropes, but failed to deliver much beyond some very good jump scares. Since it's P-13, there is hardly any blood or gore. The closest thing to gore is the discovery of a wrecked fishing boat. It didn't help that there was zero chemistry between any of the characters. There is some hostility between Jason Statham (playing Jason Statham's public image, but called Jonas Taylor) and Robert Taylor (LONGMIRE) as Dr. Heller. Page Kennedy plays DJ, a character that is a parrot away from being LL Cool Jay's character in DEEP BLUE SEA. Hong Kong actress Li BingBing (TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION) kicks ass as a single mom scientist who flirts with Jason Statham and needs rescuing a few times throughout the film. Pretty much most of the characters are plot chum to move the story forward and to be attacked by the shark. The Meg might have the biggest shark, but it doesn’t do anything to stand out from the rest of the pack of 3D shark movies. I recommend watching one of those older shark movies over this only okay shark movie.

Final Verdict: 5/10

The 3D visuals for this movie are rather disappointing. The 3D looked good in the trailer, but in the actual theater the 3D was quite flat. A few scenes really popped out, but there are too few and far between to warrant springing for a 3D ticket. It’s a real pity, with more depth separation, this movie could have looked spectacular in 3D.

Skyscraper is the latest action film from Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. At the rate he's getting movies out to the cinemas, “The Rock” is going to become the Tyler Perry of action films.

Skyscraper is another big budget movie from the long list of Die Hard homages/rip-offs released over the last 30 years. This time the action returns to a building and throws in a few classic homages to classic Hong Kong martial art action films from the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Most of the Hong Kong inspiration comes notably from Jet Li's High Risk and Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon movies. If you've seen the trailer you basically know the whole plot. Terrorists want to destroy the building and Dwayne Johnson as Will Sawyer tries to stop them and simultaneously tries to save his family from the burning building. It’s all rather predictable, cliché and your typical action movie starring “The Rock”. There are no surprises here. Okay, there is one notable surprise. Neve Campbell character of Sarah Sawyer ("The Rocks" wife) is pretty good . Sarah is a combat surgeon, and she really holds her own in the various action scenes. This film is surprisingly grim. Skyscraper takes itself way too seriously. It really could have used a Kevin Hart comedic type of character or a flamboyant Alan Rickman type of villain to break up the dreariness. Sadly this movie lacks the fun slapstick hijinks of the Jackie Chan or Wong Jing movies. It has the enjoyable action scenes but lacks the levity. Most of the character development for Will Sawyer and his son Henry are limited to their disabilities, which are mostly used as plot devices to try and create suspense or tension.

Overall I can only recommend this movie for hardcore fans of Dwayne Johnson or fans of Hong Kong action movies.

Final Verdict:

4/10
