Maleficent Mistress of Evil 3D Movie Review

3D

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil looks absolutely gorgeous in 3D ! The film begins in a scene in the forest where the camera pans and zooms in and around this location. The 3D gives the viewer a real sense of being in this magical setting. This movie has excellent 3D depth, great pop out and you have a wonderful diorama effect. Disney does not disappoint with the 3D in Maleficent Mistress Of Evil. The 3D helps to make the characters look more lifelike and realistic. Maleficent is a prime example of this with many parts of her head existing in different aspects of 3D space. The movie has many excellent perspective shots that look fantastic in 3D. Long corridors go far into the distance, and fairies pop out of the screen. The film has many darkly lit scenes and the 3D in these scenes looks fantastic (your experience may vary depending on your cinema). The film is bookended with excellent 3D scenes. The final action scene looks wonderful in 3D as different things are flying in and out of the screen and 3D depth is used in smart ways. In closing this movie was made to be seen in 3D. I suspect that future film schools may use this movie as an example of how to do effective and enjoyable 3D. The 3D probably helped me enjoy this movie more than if I watched it in 2D. Absolutely without any hesitation I give this movie my highest 3D rating and full and complete recommendation.

Final Verdict: Great 3D , Editors Choice Award

Movie

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is the sequel to the 2014 Maleficent Disney film. Maleficent was a twisted retailing of the Sleeping Beauty story. The original Maleficent movie ended essentially where Sleeping Beauty ended so this sequel covers new ground , but does it justify its own existence ?

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil takes place five years after the original. Don’t worry if you don’t remember the first movie because this movie will recap that storyline in this movie. Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) is now engaged to be married to Prince Phillip and Maleficent isn’t too happy. Prince Phillip’s family is also hesitant of this marriage. Via a series of unfortunate events Maleficent and her kind declare war on Prince Phillip’s kingdom. Will Phillip and Aurora get married ? Can humans and magical creatures live in peace and harmony with each other ? Watch this movie to find out.

Sadly Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is a mediocre movie. The motivations for the characters are basic and its all rather predictable. Angelina Jolie as Maleficent is the only character with any kind of personality. The rest of the characters are as bland as an unbuttered biscuit. Overall the acting is pretty bad in this movie. The film is filled with one note basic characters. The middle of this movie is slow and boring. I was intrigued by the aspect of more Dark Feys (winged demon looking creatures like Maleficent) but this plot point is paper thin and is only somewhat developed. This movie is a thinly veiled allegory for overcoming prejudice. Don’t worry this movie doesn’t feel overly preachy. The story has many frivolous scenes that are made to “look cool” but don’t make sense when you think about it. This movie is filled with obvious plot holes and many unresolved questions. The computer generated creatures look obviously fake and don’t have a real presence on screen. Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is a sloppy mess of a movie.

Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is not a great movie, yet it’s greater than the sum of its parts. This is a big dumb movie but I enjoyed it. Even if the magical creatures look totally fake they are still cute and enduring. This is totally a guilty pleasure kind of movie. Don’t take this movie seriously and you will probably have a good time.

In closing Maleficent Mistress Of Evil is bad movie that I actually liked. If you liked the first Maleficent movie you will probably enjoy this movie too.

Final Verdict: 6/10

The Addams Family 2019 3D Movie Review

The Addams Family 2019 3D Movie Review

Written by Jake Jarvis

3D

The Addams Family looks nice in 3D, just like a majority of other 3D computer animated films. There is depth and separation, but none of it adds anything significant to the film going experience. Besides a nice flying bat transition, there is not an interesting 3D effect through the film. Some sword play looks nice in 3D. This is not a terrible 3D experience, but it’s far from a remarkable one.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

The 2019 Addams Family movie, is the latest adaption of Charles Addams' evergreen and gleefully morbid cartoons. This time as a 3D full color computer animated feature with an all star voice-cast.

This film has essentially three plots. The first plot is with the character of Pugsley and his upcoming party. The next plot is with the nearby town meeting the Addam’s for the first time. The third plot revolves around a reality TV star who enjoys making over homes. As you might expect the three stories come together. Sadly this movie feels like a loose arrangement of scenes and not a fully coherent narrative. Some gag scenes work, but other plot scenes are just boring. This 2019 movie has many references to the original one panel illustrations . The film also has several easter eggs references from other previous adaptions. The only real chuckles to be had watching this film are from referencing previous versions of The Addams Family. Unfortunately, not nearly as much care was taken towards the actual storyline of this movie. Yet another be an individual and don't conform morality tale. After a few minutes you will figure out exactly what happens and there really aren't any surprises. This version really doesn't add that much to the mythos. Sure the nooses on the ends of Wednesday's braids are way cool, but that's not enough to make an entire full length feature film interesting. They introduce the great idea that the Addams family is an immigrant story. This great idea is all but ruined by the bad parody of Martha Stewart. This character is annoying and is painful to watch on screen. This movie is one huge cliché. To add insult to injury the 3D character designs attempt to be faithful adaptions of Charles Addams' original cartoons, but more resemble half baked Despicable Me character designs. Essentially you have seen this movie a hundred times already.

The Addams Family might be kooky, and spooky but they aren’t doing anything new or interesting in this 2019 film. Instead of watching this film, go read a collection of Charles Addams cartoons or watch the 1960s TV show or the 1990s movies and save yourself heartache and money. Simply put this animated Addams Family movie is not worth your time.

Gemini Man 3D Movie Review

Gemini Man 3D Movie Review

Written By: Krista Strom

3D

Gemini Man is another enjoyable 3D film by Ang Lee. Ang Lee is a filmmaker who has been at the cutting edge of 3D technology, and this film is no different. Not only does this movie boast 120 fps high frame rate (120 FPS is only available in a few locations , most locations  are 60 FPS) , but it also has an entirely digital human character in the role of younger Will Smith. So how well do these special effects pay off? I would say in terms of the 3D and the high frame rate, the result is a very crisp and clear image. At times, it even felt a bit too clean. Many shots in the movie look fantastic in 3D . Several under water shots really make you feel like you are in the water with the actor with multiple layers of bubbles in multiple layers of 3D . Many scenes with guns looked very impressive in 3D as they popped out of the screen and went far into negative space.  The movie uses diagonal shots in fun ways and the curved train really looks nice in 3D. The action sequence in the empty store was especially strong in 3D. The 3D is bright, colorful, sharp and was never an issue even in scenes with low light. One moment in a close combat fight with a knife was very cool to watch in 3D. Overall, Ang Lee is an absolute master of 3D filmmaking and I would highly recommend seeing this film in 3D and in High Frame rate, just to get the full experience. This film didn’t quite live up to Life of Pi in my opinion but it’s clear that Ang Lee is basically just competing against himself at this point.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

Gemini Man is about the sniper Henry, (Will Smith) who wants to retire from his job. Unfortunately for Henry, he ends up with a target on his back. The catch is, the person who's hunting him, (Junior) turns out to be a younger version of himself.

This is ostensibly an action movie, but it’s almost border lining on psychological horror. There are a lot of aspects to the plot that are deeply disturbing if you think about them. Though to be fair, this is not necessarily a story you’re supposed to think deeply about – it’s mostly just an excuse to watch Will Smith fight himself. For what it’s worth, the story does a good job of maintaining excitement and high stakes throughout the film, making it a fun watching experience despite the moral ambiguity. The story deals with complex topics such as human cloning, ptsd, the military industrial complex, abuse, and more, but it doesn’t delve too much into the nuance of these topics. The film keeps a somewhat morally simplistic view. It never comes off as being too preachy. The film allows the viewers to draw their own conclusions, but it also doesn’t leave a lot of room for grey area.

Visually I think this form of “heightened reality” might exist somewhere in the uncanny valley – incredibly realistic but not quite there, resulting in it feeling slightly unsettling. But in the context of the movie, this actually fits. Will Smith’s character himself feels unsettled by the things he’s experienced, so it makes sense that that feeling is reflected within the visuals. It does seem to add to the “real but unreal” feeling of the story. “Seeing a ghost” seems like an accurate description. As for the digital character of young Will Smith, I thought the effects were okay. He does at minimum look like a human, though whether he looks definitely like Will Smith or more like “Will Smith adjacent” kind of varies from shot to shot. This slight variation in quality was more distracting than anything else, though I expect this technology will rapidly improve in the coming years. Much like the visuals, the resolution to the story seems a bit “too clean” and ironically, lacking in realism. I have a feeling that if a similar thing were to take place in reality ( which scarily it very well could ) the ramifications would be a lot messier.

Ultimately I thought Gemini Man was a great cinematic experience and a well crafted emotional journey. Though the story does has its faults it’s still a great film.

Final Verdict: 8/10
