The Lion King 2019 3D Movie Review

The Lion King 2019 3D Movie Review

3D

The 3D visuals in The Lion King (2019) are a nice yet unrealized aspect of this film. The 3-D does help make this movie come to life. In some ways the 3D may have helped me further enjoy this movie. The environments and animals look more realistic because of the 3D. The 3D gives the character models visual depth . This depth helps to make the movie appear more believable. Many times, I wanted to reach out and pet the lion cubs because they look so cute. Several times the 3D helped me feel like I was in the scene with the characters. About half the scenes are benefited by the 3D. Sadly many scenes look very flat in 3D . When the camera zooms out and the 3D is hardly noticeable. On the other hand the scenes where the camera is closer to the action the 3D looks very nice. Some scenes with tall cliffs are better because of the 3D depth. One chase scene in the elephant graveyard looks especially nice in 3D.  At times the animals various body parts will pop out of the scene and the 3D helps to make these scenes more fun. The movie doesn’t have any 3D scenes that truly wow the eye.  One rain scene toward the end could have looked amazing in 3D but it didn’t work and I felt like the 3D was toned down when it should have been the opposite. Don’t get me wrong I did enjoy the 3D aspect of this movie; many scenes look very nice in 3D, but I feel like it could have been much better.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

I need to state several things before I begin this review. First, I love the original 1994 The Lion King film. I consider the original film to be one of the best Disney animated films of all time. This version of the movie is a essentially an extended remake of that classic film. Second, this review is not a critique of Disney or a comparison review. I will not be comparing this version of the film with the 1994 original. I will not question the motivations for making this film. Disney will make and remake any movie that they see fit. This review will remain focused on my thoughts on this specific film.

Just in case you have never seen The Lion King I will give you a quick recap of the story. The Lion King is a film with talking animals. The lion Mufasa is the king. Mufasa has recently had a child which is named Simba. Scar is the brother of Mufasa and is envious that Simba is the new heir to the throne. The plot has many similarities to Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the Japanese anime Kimba the White Lion. The story of The Lion King is full of tragedy, betrayal and is a compelling story that follows the tried and true hero’s journey narrative.

What did I enjoy in this movie? The story is fun, and the songs are excellently sung. The music and songs are well integrated into the narrative and feel natural. The computer rendered graphics are incredible. 90% of the time I never doubted the visuals that I saw on screen. The animal animations are spot on and they look natural and make sense in the context of this movie. Overall, I did like the voice cast in this film. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon. This is the kind of movie that the entire family can enjoy.

What are the negatives aspects of this movie? This movie is nearly two-hours in length and it feels long. I wish that we received some backstory on Scar . Unfortunately Scar feels like a one-dimensional undeveloped character. I did enjoy the voice cast, but I wasn’t wowed by it. With the exception to Timon, Pumbaa, and Mufasa the rest of the voice cast is simply mediocre. The visuals are excellent but somehow someway I felt that the characters are soulless and lack emotional weight. This is difficult to explain but the characters look incredible, but they don’t feel right. This is a showpiece for the ‘uncanny valley’. The ‘uncanny valley’ is where the visuals are truly photo realistic, but my brain knows it is fake and can’t fully emotionally connect to subject matter. This movie is not a failure it just didn’t totally resonate with me.

In closing I did enjoy my time with 2019’s The Lion King. The songs and story are fun, but it just didn’t feel right. This movie has all the components to be a great film, but it misses the mark.

Final Verdict: 7/10

Spider-Man Far From Home 3D Movie Review

Spider-Man Far From Home 3D Movie Review

Written By: Jake Jarvis

3D

Spider-Man Far From Home has some crazy good 3D visuals. The many Mysterio and Elemental action scenes are very memorable to see in 3D. Both 3D pop and 3D depth look fantastic in this movie. One specific awesome pop out scene is when Aunt May throws something to Peter Parker. Several audience members actually ducked in the theater while watching this scene. This scene isn’t gimmicky but is a funny scene that is made better by the 3D. The many European locations look incredible and the scenery alone is used to excellent effect to enhance the 3D. The extra money spent on 3D is well worth it just for the sight seeing. All the enjoyable action scenes make the 3D really worthwhile. After 11 years and 20+ movies the Marvel cinematic universe has yet another 3D winner on its hands.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

Spider-man: Far From Home, is the 2nd Sony/Marvel Spidey live-action movie. To put it simply this is a spectacular Spider-Man film. This amazing film functions as a sequel to Spider-Man Homecoming, an epilogue to Avengers  Infinity War / Avengers Endgame and it also works to push the Marvel cinematic universe forward.

Spider-Man Far From Home begins shortly after the events of Avengers Endgame. The movie knows how to keep its story easygoing instead of stopping dead in its tracks when it explains the fallout of the Thanos snap a.k.a. "The Blip". This is more of a summer romance film with a heroics subplot than a full on superhero action movie. This film really felt like a Stan Lee/John Romita Sr Amazing Spider-Man story with a European twist. The humor works well and the action is well choreographed to make for a fun adventure. Like Jon Watts' first Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man Homecoming there are dozens of easter eggs to keep eagle-eyed fans happy. Pay special attention to license plates for nods to classic Spider-man stories and character debuts. The film has many surprises, including the return of a key character from the first Iron Man movie. Plus there are two post credit scenes that will likely leave you slack jawed. Tom Holland continues to impress as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Zendaya truly makes MJ a real flesh and blood character, not just a trophy girlfriend. Peter Parker and MJ have wonderful chemistry on screen and their relationship makes perfect sense. Everyone gets a few moments to shine and to build their characters. Remy Hill as the new kid is very fun to watch. Brad Davis takes on some of the Flash Thompson "villian" role and creates some of the funniest moments in the film. Jake Gyllenhaal as Quintin Beck/Mysterio really sells the character. Even knowing Mysterio's comic book backstory, Gyllenhaal still had me guessing Mysterio's true intentions. Mysterio is a fantastic character and I really enjoyed watching him in this movie. The only issue I had with this movie can be with the pacing. Sometimes the movie can dramatically slow down when they have exposition scenes. It is only a minor inconvenience and often it can help the viewer catch their breath after the various action scenes. Obviously your mileage will vary but it’s hard to deny the pacing can off putting at times. Overall the movie works quite well and is very enjoyable from beginning to end.

Spider-Man Far From Home is one very fun and satisfying summer blockbuster.

Final Verdict: 9/10

Toy Story 4 3D Movie Review

Toy Story 4 3D Movie Review

Written By: Adolph Vega

3D

The 3D aspect of Toy Story 4 is a nice but an unnecessary addition to this movie. The movie starts off very strong with a scene in the rain. Rain looks fantastic in 3D and it looks great in this movie. Rain uses multiple layers of 3D and it really helps you feel like you are in the movie and helps set that tone for the scene. The 3D helps make the toys look more realistic. The 3D gives the toys dimension. Many times the characters will point objects toward the screen or certain parts of a toy may pop out of the screen. The 3D is not gimmicky but is used in a natural way that works well within the story. One scene where the characters are walking towards the camera on the side of a highway looks very nice in 3D. The amount of 3D depth is limited. I feel like it could have had more 3D depth. I never had a “wow this looks awesome” in 3D moment outside of the rainy opening scene. The 3D aspect of this movie is well done but is mostly a minor aspect of the visuals. I enjoyed the 3D aspect of Toy Story 4 and it looks very nice, but it didn’t blow me away.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Simply put Toy Story 4 is an amazing film and is the perfect follow up the amazing third film in this excellent franchise. Before I watched this film I assumed this was a cash grab film by Disney and that it was an unnecessary sequel. Toy Story 3 ended so perfectly why bother to make a forth movie, I thought to myself. I was wrong to think this. Toy Story 4 is an incredible film and is one of the best Pixar movies in years. Toy Story 4 is easily the best animated movie of 2019.

The plot of Toy Story 4 revolves around the character of Woody and Bo Peep. Bo Peep was notably absent from the third Toy Story film and this movie starts off by explaining that absence. The movie shifts back and continues its own story shortly after the events of Toy Story 3. The movie is fairly self contained so you don’t need to watch the previous three films before watching this film. Bonnie is the new owner of Andy’s toys and is scared to begin kindergarten. During Bonnie’s first day she creates a new toy named Forky. Forky is not a traditional toy it is literally made of a plastic spork and some assorted crafting materials. During a family road trip Forky escapes and Woody must reunite Forky with Bonnie. During this journey Woody finds Bo Peep and the adventure to reunite with Bonnie begins. The movie introduces many new toys to this story. The movie flows well and it knows how to slow down to introduce new characters and to develop the plot. I do want to warn parents that some scenes in this movie may scare little children, but they are brief and make sense in the context of the plot. The story is perfectly balanced with humor and heart and justifies its own existence as a theatrical film. The ending (without giving anything away) is smart, heartfelt and gives the viewer a much-earned emotional catharsis. The ending just put this movie over the top for me and I am still crying several hours after watching the end credits. The movie has many emotional scenes. All of the emotional elements are earned and are perfectly handled in the movie. Toy Story 4 has a simple yet effective story that completely delivers on its premise.

I really couldn’t find any flaws with this movie. The humor works perfectly and I had many huge belly laughs. The animation is beautiful and the visuals are gorgeous. The new main characters are interesting and are given plenty of backstory. The writing is truly excellent. The only possible critique is that I wanted more discussion on what is to be a toy in this universe. How exactly does a toy gain conscious? The movie hints at these deeper questions but never truly explains them. This is something I always wondered in this series. Ultimately it doesn’t matter so I can’t dock the film for not explaining the deeper philosophical aspects of this film franchise. Toy Story 4 is a fantastic movie and I don’t know of any flaws keeping it from achieving cinematic perfection.

I adore Toy Story 4. Somehow the Toy Story film franchise has done the impossible and has hit the cinematic a grand slam. All four Toy Story films are wonderful. As I watched Toy Story 4 I laughed, I cried, and I was smiling from beginning to end. Toy Story 4 is not only the best movie of the summer it is easily the best movie of 2019. As I am writing this review I am still crying from the excellent of this movie. The tears are that of pure joy. They nailed it ! Toy Story 4 is a better movie than I could have imagined. Toy Story 4 is a pure delight and I shall give this my highest possible recommendation.

Final Verdict: 10 / 10 Editors Choice Award
