Predator Badlands 3D Movie Review

Predator Badlands 3D Movie Review

By Jacob Scarberry

3D

With the only previous Predator 3D release being the notoriously bad post-conversion of the 1987 classic (back in 2010), I was worried this one might follow suit. Fortunately, this new 3D presentation looks really nice — though it could’ve been a bit stronger in places.

Predator Badlands opens with a terrific shot from inside a cave looking out toward the horizon — the cavern’s edges stretch toward the viewer while the skyline fades into the distance, showing off impressive 3-D depth. That same sense of dimension continues throughout the movie.

There are several fun pop-out moments — debris flying toward the audience, weapons aimed straight at the viewer — that make you instinctively want to duck. Some nighttime scenes naturally flatten things a bit, but even then, there’s still a solid sense of depth. I only noticed a couple brief instances of ghosting, and only on the subtitles.

Overall, Predator Badlands has an impressive 3D presentation that’s absolutely worth watching in that format.

Final 3D Score: 7/10*

* Previously this score was 8/10. Upon further consideration the reviewer has changed his mind and lowered it to a 7.

Movie

The Predator franchise has had a rocky 30-plus-year run — starting with a fantastic first film and followed by sequels of wildly varying quality. But after the surprisingly good Prey in 2022, it feels like the series has finally found its footing again. Disney made the right move by keeping Prey director Dan Trachtenberg on board for Predator Badlands, because this movie is genuinely great.

The story follows Dek, the so-called “runt” of the Yautja tribe. Ordered by their father to be killed for being weak, Dek is spared by his brother Kwei, who lets him escape to another planet, Genna — only for their father to slaughter Kwei in the name of tradition. Determined to earn his way back home, Dek sets out to claim the impossible trophy known as the Kalisk. Genna, however, is far more dangerous than he expects.

While struggling to survive the planet’s brutal environment, Dek encounters a legless android named Thia, who reluctantly becomes his partner on this perilous quest. I won’t spoil what happens next, but let’s just say a surprisingly cute merchandising opportunity joins the mix — creating an unlikely but endearing little “family.”

I’m not gonna lie — I was genuinely surprised by how good this film was. Even after Prey, I didn’t expect Disney to actually deliver another solid Predator entry, but here we are. The performances are strong all around, with Elle Fanning doing a solid job as Thia (even if her slightly grating tone seems intentional for the character).

Jeff Cutter’s cinematography is fantastic — shot with older lenses that give the movie a cinematic flair and some stylish lens flares — while making New Zealand look otherworldly in the process. The score by Sarah Schachner and Benjamin Wallfisch is another standout, and the sound mixing deserves serious awards attention. The editing keeps the pacing tight with no unnecessary fluff.

Sure, the story is fairly predictable — the “young warrior rises up against the odds” formula — but it smartly flips expectations by making the Predator the hero instead of the villain. A few CGI elements don’t quite hold up, but there are also some truly impressive effects, especially the entirely computer-generated mandibles, which look fantastic.

Overall, Predator: Badlands is a strong, worthy addition to the franchise — entertaining, well-made, and hopefully just the beginning of a new era for Predator.

Final Movie Score: 8/10

Free Guy 3D Movie Review

Free Guy

3D Movie Review

Written By: Jake Jarvis

3D

A lot of opportunities were missed with the 3D effects of Free Guy, which is a damn shame. Several potential pop outs were shot with the wrong camera angle limiting any visual impact that it should have achieved. There is good 3D depth, but with all the dazzling action sequences there should have been many more 3d pop outs. The 3D really didn't add much extra to the viewing experience, but it is enjoyable. Sadly Free Guy doesn’t fully live up to to its 3D potential, but it is enjoyable enough to recommend.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Hollywood, so far, hasn't made a decent film directly based on a video game, but they have created many good to great movies based on gaming. Free Guy is a one of the great Hollywood films based on gaming.

The plot is dual fold with one plot being set in the real world and the other plot being set within the virtual world. Both plots intermix and are dependent on other. Sadly, the ‘real world’ plot for Free Guy is cliched. Basically it's the story of a boy who falls for his dream girl and his entire world changes. Video game wise its basically, Grand Theft Auto meets Fortnite with maybe some Sims mixed in. Ryan Reynolds is “Guy” a bank teller character within the open world video game of Free City. Guy’s life is transformed as he learns that he is living within a video game. There is massive amounts of pandering to a geek audience and it works well. Frankly this movie will have you geeking out. It’s not the premise, but the execution that makes Free Guy an interesting and enjoyable film.

Free Guy is a 180 degree turn from Deadpool 's raunchy comedy and its every bit as funny, even with its PG-13 rating. There are a couple of surprise hilarious cameos that are way too good to spoil. Dozens of great performances make this movie really enjoyable. Ryan Reynolds is simply a joy to watch on screen. Taika Waititi is hilariously ridiculous as Antoine a toxic game developer CEO. Joe Keery is great as Keys, the hopelessly romantic hacker. I liked all the characters in this movie. The stand out performance is that of Lil Rel  Howery as Buddy. Buddy is Guy's best friend, and he steals the movie. The buddy character is essentially a reference to almost every buddy role of Kevin Hart’s career. Overall the comedy works well and the characters are very likable in Free Guy.

Free Guy takes awhile to get everything setup, but then moves at a very rapid pace with plenty of action and laughs along the way. Alas, Free Guy has no post credit scene, but you will enjoy this movie from beginning to end. Some parts of the movie are cliche, but in closing I had lots of fun watching this movie. Free Guy is well worth watching on the big screen.

Final Verdict: 8/10

Spies in Disguise 3D Movie Review

Spies in Disguise 3D Movie Review

Written By: Jake Jarvis

3D

Like most computer animated 3D movies, the 3D element of Spies In Disguise is quite good. The movie has many fun uses of inventive 3D pop outs. It also uses 3D depth to a good degree.  Constant movement creates dazzling 3D effects through out the film.  The great animation and character designs help make the 3D quite a treat for the eyes. Every action sequence is a sight to behold with kinetic energy and pop outs. The close ups of Walter Beckett's nose are dazzling and laugh out funny. Spies in Disguise is a visual treat and it has very enjoyable 3D.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

Spies in Disguise is an animated feature film directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane for Blue Sky. It is now being released by Disney, under their recently acquired studio, 20th Century Fox. This movie has been through allot of hands and been delayed a few times. After the first teaser trailer released I was not excited to watch this movie. Never judge a movie by its first teaser trailer because I am surprised by how much I actually enjoyed this movie.

This is Will Smith's first animated movie since Shark Tale (2004) and Tom Holland's first lead voice role in an animated movie. Karen Gillian voices a fellow agent, Eyes, and she uses an exaggerated Scottish accent to great comedic effect. Will Smith voices Lance Sterling, the world's greatest spy, who is turned into a pigeon and has to rely on tech-nerd Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) to help save the world. Ben Mendelsohn voices Killian, a high tech antagonist with a robotic hand. Country singer/ actress Reba McEntire voices the Joy Jenkins, the big boss of the spy agency. The story takes its time setting up the plot, showing off the tropes, and then takes off a frantic pace with lots of laughs and action along the way. A third act plot twist keeps things interesting and manages to actually say something interesting about espionage, foreign policy, and toxic masculinity. This is a good silly spy movie for kids.

Spies in Disguise is like James Bond meets Stop That Pigeon with a side trip to The Incredibles. This is very funny stuff. Kids will enjoy this movie and adults will have fun too.

Final Verdict: 7/10
