Avatar 3D Movie Review

Avatar 3D Movie Review

3D

Simply put Avatar is a James Cameron 3D movie. James Cameron knows how to do 3D movies, and he is a pioneer in 3D technology. I could just stop right there and you'd get the point, but I'll elaborate in this review. The point is, Avatar is an absolute 3-D powerhouse, and with it being shot (largely) in 3D it aids in how beautiful the 3D can be in this movie. I didn't see this movie in 2009, but Avatar has a ton of 3D depth, and many instances of 3D pop-outs and a terrific use of color. It will be difficult to limit my appreciation to only a few noteworthy moments or scenes. I have to mention the floating mountain islands, they look amazing in 3D. The various aerial scenes are also top notch in 3D. The sequence with the tree of souls, and the floating seeds is amazing to see in 3D. I definitely appreciate what Avatar has done for 3D, and 3D storytelling, and how James Cameron has helped to make 3DTVs a thing. In closing the entirety of Avatar is fantastic to see 3D.

Final Verdict:

Great 3D & Editors Choice Award

Movie

James Cameron is a powerhouse director, having directed some amazing films, with Terminator 2 being one of my all time favorites, and with his previous film being Titanic netting him 4 Oscars, expectations were sky high for his follow-up. Cameron knew this, and instead of sacrificing his vision, he took twelve years to bring it to life, in-between dives down to the Titanic, of course. Were the high expectations met? In my eyes, no.

Avatar is practically a CGI-addled remake of the 1990 movie Dances with Wolves, but done with even less subtlety and class. The plot revolves around a former Marine, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who is a paraplegic whose twin brother who was murdered in a robbery gone bad. To salvage an important mission, he's hired by a corporation to take his brother's place going to the planet of Pandora. Pandora is chock full of unobtanium, and it happens to be in the centerpiece of the indigenous tribe, the Navi.

Jake is sent to infiltrate the Navi in an avatar, to try to diplomatically remove the Navi and mine the super rare mineral. Things get complicated as Jake begins to assimilate into the tribe, becoming one of them, falling in love with Neyteri (Zoe Saldanha) and gaining an enemy with Colonel Quarritch (Stephen Lang). Jake must use his military knowhow, his newfound Navi skills, and his brotherhood to stop the destruction of Pandora.

The film is a 2 and a half hour feast for the eyes, delivering a high-quality visual experience that is colorful and well-shot, and the HDR helps to make the world of Pandora look like a stunning beautiful place. Avatar looks pretty , but it’s also a pretty hollow movie. Avatar’s message is rammed into your head repeatedly to the point of hatred, and the world isn't fully developed. Creature designs are also rather lazy and the Navi themselves are just blue cats with a tentacle attached and more human-esque eyes. The acting ranges from decent to over-the-top, the writing, especially the dialogue, is rote and predictable. When Avatar is done you're left feeling overwhelmed by the whole endeavor instead of being inspired or in awe.

Despite these problems, seeing it in 3D on the largest screen available to me within a reasonable driving distance, in a heated recliner, with Dolby Atmos surround sound, made this worth the trip. The whole film is clearly Cameron's, and he has a firm grasp on pacing and action, and I wasn't lost or confused during the action or expository scenes. Avatar has a terrific score by the late, great James Horner. The wonderful music helped make this an easier pill to swallow.

Does Avatar deserve to be the highest grossing film of all time? No. But I can see why it is, especially having never viewed the film before today (September 24, 2022) as it's an experience moreso than a work of art.

Avatar is a showcase of CGI spectacle and gripping action of the highest order. Regardless of the flaws, see it on the biggest screen you've got handy and in 3D, it's a treat.

Final Verdict: 7/10

Thor Love and Thunder 3D Movie Review

3D

My heart sank during the opening shot of Thor Love And Thunder. It was the flattest of all flat shots. Essentially the shot had a shadow on dry land, and it had zero depth. Fortunately, for 3D enthusiasts, this issue is promptly rectified with loads of cgi eye candy. Most of the long shots don't have great depth, but the mid and close up shots make up for that with impressive depth and a few subtle pop outs. Some 3D is muddled in a few darker scenes, but not all. Some of the best 3D scenes include; scenes with the Necro sword, the exercise montage, the flying goats, naked Thor, and finally the cave battle with a rabbit. Overall Thor Love and Thunder is well worth seeing in 3D.

Final Verdict: Great 3D

Movie

Thor Love And Thunder is tearjerker story told as a rom-com with super-heroes in a movie made for teenagers. Taika Waititi's take on Gor the God Butcher and Mighty Thor will probably ruffle the feathers of comic book purists. This movie might also upset many fans of the Marvel movie formula.

Love and Thunder feels more like one of those British Ealing comedies (The only thing missing was Sir Alec Guinness) with its dry and dark humor. Thor Love And Thunder doesn’t feel like your typical “Marvel movie”. Without giving away spoilers, this movie shakes up Thor's status quo. Christian Bale is incredible playing Gor the god butcher. Gor is a more traditional comic book villain. Bale really sells Gor as a sympathetic and relatable character. Russell Crow is great at playing the character of Zeus. Zeus is a corrupt, obnoxious, petty, dictator (just like he was in greek/roman mythology). Zeus has a stereotypical Mediterranean accent instead of the typical Shakespearean British accent. A lot of the old gang is back in Love and Thunder, including Natalie Portman as Dr, Jane Foster (who is also The Mighty Thor). This movie even includes a cameo from the Guardians of the Galaxy. Love and Thunder has many funny jokes and some decent action. I didn't find the mix of humor and drama jarring, but you mileage may vary. If you can overlook some of the characters acting stupider than normal, you will have a really good time with Thor Love And Thunder. Be sure to wait around for the mid credit and post credit scenes after the movie concludes.

Thor Love And Thunder is not perfect, but it is perfectly good. This movie won’t be for everyone but I really enjoyed it.

Final Verdict: 8/10

Minions The Rise of Gru

3D Movie Review

Minions 2 Rise of Gru 3-D Movie Review

3D

Minions Rise of Gru looks very nice in 3D. I do think that it could have been a stronger presentation as some scenes appear flat and lack depth. Fans of 3D will be happy with this presentation as we get some nice pop outs and a decent amount of depth in some scenes. Occasionally the movie will have a sequence where it goes into slow motion and those quick scenes really look wonderful in 3D. Sometimes the movie will use a 2D animation style and those scenes also benefit from being in 3D. I like how the movie uses layering to make the 2D scenes look more visually interesting. The final battle scene with the magical creatures fighting the minions is especially strong in 3D. Another scene with some henchmen fighting Master Chow in the alley was very enjoyable in 3D. The 3D comes and goes, and it seems to be almost turned off in many scenes. It just feels like they held back and only used 3D in some scenes where the entire movie could have looked fabulous in 3D. Overall Minions Rise of Gru has many memorable moments of superb 3D, so I do recommend it. If I were to use a number scale the 3D is maybe a 7/10 when I think it could have easily been a 10/10.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Minions Rise of Gru is the second ‘minions’ movie and the fifth movie in the ‘Despicable’ franchise.  The minions are back in another wacky movie adventure. To be blunt this isn’t a great movie, but it is more fun than I thought it would be.

Minions Rise of Gru continues the story that began in the original Minions movie.  Don’t worry this movie is self-contained and is strait forward, so you can watch it even if you haven’t seen of the previous movies in the “Despicable” movie franchise. The story of Minions Rise of Gru is all over the place. Minions Rise of Gru is set in the 1970s and Gru is about 11 years old. Though a series of wacky shenanigans Gru is kidnapped, and the minions need to rescue their boss. The movie juggles several subplots to make its story. You have one subplot with three minions learning martial arts from Master Chow and trying to rescue Gru. You have another subplot with Gru and his kidnapper bonding. You have another subplot with one minion who is trying to obtain a magical talisman. Finally, you have the Vicious 6 supervillain gang who want to get revenge on Gru. All these subplots combine to become a 90-minute film. The movie is very fast paced, and it rarely gives the audience a moment to breath before the next gag. Many elements of the story fall too perfectly into place. The movie has no real stakes or consequences. I know this is an animated movie for children so I should cut it some slack, but this movie can become tedious to watch. Some of the subplots could have been consolidated or deleted all together with little being lost from the whole package. This movie feels like a series of skits that are loosely connected to make a narrative. Simply put this movie has too much going on, and it doesn’t know how to handle it all.

Minions Rise of Gru is not going to be for everyone, yet I did enjoy my time with this movie. I found the elements with Gru and the Vicious 6 villain gang to be the most amusing aspects of this movie. I really loved Steve Carell’s portrayal of a young gru. I want to know more about the Vicious 6 and all its members. The comedy is basic, but I did find myself laughing at many points. The animation is well done and has a nice style to it. Placing this movie in the 1970’s is a gimmick, but it worked to make it a more fun and interesting setting. Master Chow is wonderful character, and she deserves her own TV Show / movie. I really like the dynamic between the character of Wild Knuckles and Gru. The soundtrack is incredible, and it fits the movie perfectly. The minions are less annoying in this movie than they have been in previous films. Maybe it was my low expectations, but I found more enjoyment from this movie than I expected to. I fully assumed that I would hate this movie, but Minions Rise of Gru is a passable way to spend 90 minutes of your day. FYI this movie as a nice mid credits scene that is worth checking out.

Minions Rise of Gru is a fine movie, and despite its many flaws I did like it. I will likely forget this movie in a week but somehow some way this movie works, and it has some merit as family friendly entertainment.

Final Verdict: 6/10
