Dumbo (2019) 3D Movie Review

I didn’t know what to expect from the 3D in Dumbo going in, but I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is slow paced, but once we got to the acrobatics and flying sequences, I fell slightly in love. These acrobatic scenes are especially fun in 3D. I just wish there was even more of it. Maybe several minute acrobatic performances are unrealistic and only appeal specifically to me, but I still couldn’t help but to feel a little cheated every time an aerial shot was interrupted by silly things like plot and dialogue. Overall the circus acts that we did get in this movie were visually stunning. Speaking of the visuals the computer graphics were fine for the most part; I thought Dumbo’s eyes were kind of creepy at first, but they eventually grew on me. I have to praise this film for all the creative ways spotlights were used, and I’d almost say it’s worth it to see this film in 3D just for the lighting alone. Unfortunately I didn’t feel like the 3D added much to the parts of the movie that weren’t circus performances or flying sequences, which was the majority of the movie. Overall, I think it was a decent 3D experience.

In terms of animated Disney films, Dumbo was actually a great choice for a live action remake. Unlike The Lion King or Aladdin, the original Dumbo isn’t a communally defining feature of the millennial childhood, so it makes sense to breathe new life into it. Dumbo first came out in 1941, so I think it’s great that they’re bringing it to a new generation.

Dumbo is the story of a baby elephant with large ears who learns how to fly, but it’s also the story of the circus troupe he’s born into, and how the people around him relate to him. I was surprised to find out it was directed by Tim Burton, as it seems sweeter than his usual fare. It was a fun movie and with a lovely story, though I don’t think there was any brilliant overarching commentary in it. Some of the side characters in the troupe could have been developed more. I think there are some parallels between Dumbo and the other characters that could have been drawn better than they were. The film is fairly morally absolute; you can immediately tell who the bad guys are before they’ve even done anything bad, and it’s easy to route against them. Ultimately for a kids movie, this is perfectly fine, and the movie has a lot of heart to it.

Incidentally, this film is also well grounded in film history. Throughout the movie there are references to the likes of the Lumiere brothers and Busby Berkeley, and there’s a scene in the movie where people are watching clips on an old projector. They’re small details, but they’re something the film savvy viewer can appreciate.

All told, I liked this movie a good deal , and it’s a fun family friendly movie. The story is engaging but superficial. It’s not my favorite Disney movie of all time, but at least it’s still better than Will Smith in body paint .

Wonder Park 3-D Movie Review

Wow! This movie was made for 3D. The 3D visuals look sharp, vibrant and perfectly compliment this movie. The movie is a real showcase for 3D and how to properly do it in an animated movie. Pop-out 3D and depth-based 3D both look great in this movie. Often the movie uses multiple layers of 3D to make a fantastic diorama effect. It can be gimmicky at times but this 3D is totally worth it. The 3D aspect in Wonder Park looks excellent from beginning to end.

Wonder Park is the story of a young girl named June who enjoys using her imagination to build a fantastical amusement park. One day June is magically transported into the ‘Wonder Land’ amusement park that she has imagined. Wonder Land is in trouble and June must help her furry friends restore the park back to its prior glory.

The movie looks gorgeous. The art style is cute and colorful. The human characters have exaggerated heads and eyes. The bigger eyes and larger heads look strange at first but you quickly become used to it. The various animal characters look very furry and are adorable. The visuals are easily the best aspect of this movie.

This movie is cliché and predictable. The story is sweet natured but it doesn’t do anything new or different. The amusement park angle is okay but it doesn’t go beyond the superficial. The movie is very fast paced and is action packed. The movie can be a little too frantic and random at times. All the jokes presented in this movie are rudimentary and have been done a billion times before. The only unique aspect of this movie is the “pi song”. This mathematical song is clever, funny and is well sung. The movie is filled with plot holes and unanswered plot points. In some ways the movie feels like an underdeveloped Pixar movie. This is one very sappy movie. It’s just too sweet and lacks any substance. I was never bored with this movie but I never really cared about anything that happened on screen. I did like the characters but nobody really stood out. It’s all rather forgettable and uninspired.

I neither hated nor loved this movie. Wonder Park is an adequate inoffensive okay family adventure.

The 3D presentation in this movie never wowed me, but overall I did enjoy it. The movie mostly uses 3D depth. Pop-out 3D scenes are rare in this movie. The movie has several scenes with long hallways and the 3D depth compliments these forced perspective shots. Several space scenes look very nice in 3D. The 3D is a nice yet unnecessary addition to this movie. I can mildly recommend watching this movie in 3D.

Captain Marvel is the first female led Marvel cinematic movie. It is a self-contained movie that showcases a different perspective to the super hero origin story.

Captain Marvel is set in the 1990’s and has a non-linear storyline. Flashbacks are a key component of this story. The main character of Carol Danvers goes on a journey of self-discovery. The skrulls are a shape shifting alien species that arrive on earth and Carol Danvers is determined to stop them. While visiting earth Carol meets up with Nick Fury from Shield. Carol Danvers and Nick Fury are together for the majority of this sci-fi adventure. The story has many interesting twists and turns. When the movie begins it can be slightly confusing. Don’t worry eventually everything explains itself and makes sense (sort of).

Character development of Carol Danvers is the main component of this movie. Brie Larson portrays the character of Captain Marvel. This performance changes dramatically within the movie. At first she has a cold aloof robotic personality, but as she discovers the truth she becomes a more likable warm protagonist. Samual L Jackson reprises his role of Nick Fury and is a real delight in this movie. Nick Fury has been in several Marvel films but you have never seen him like this. Unlike other Marvel films this isn’t just an extended cameo for Nick Fury. This movie essentially is a buddy movie with Nick Furry and Carol Danvers. They have great chemistry together.

I enjoyed the movie but I didn’t love it. The movie is all over the place with pacing. It starts off fast paced but it really drags in the middle. The movie really ramps up during the ending. The acting for secondary characters is average at best. The action scenes are fun but some of quick cuts and strange camera positions can be jarring to the eye. The movie opens up several plot holes for the marvel cinematic universe. Some of the comedic elements seem forced and too obvious. Captain Marvel is a good not great movie.

Overall I did enjoy my time with this movie. It is far from perfect but it’s a good foundation to build upon and I look forward to seeing more of this character in the future. Captain Marvel is not a marvelous film, but it is still worthy of your time.
