Dune (2021) 3D Movie Review

3D

Sadly the 3D in Dune (2021) is not stellar (unlike its cinematography). The 3D aspect of this movie is clearly an after thought, and is far from necessary to enjoy this movie. The 3D is functional as it shows depth in many scenes. The 3D is especially nice in close ups. That being said many scenes are in the shadows, and many wide shoots look flat. Also, there aren't any pop out 3D moments. If you are really jonesing for a new 3D cinema experience, it will do; but I'd save my money for something else in 3D. Don’t get me wrong I don’t hate the 3D aspect of this movie. The 3D in Dune 2021 is fine and it does’t look bad, but overall I was hoping for more.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Dune (1965 novel by Frank Herbert) is considered to be one of the greatest science fiction novels of all time. Dune is the sci-fi equivalent of the Lord of the Rings, as its a masterpiece in its genre. I am happy to report that this Dune (2021) movie is a truly great film.

Dune almost single handily inspired generations to focus on environmental issues. Dealing with environmental issues is a big part of this movie. Many of the environmental events in the Dune Saga have come to pass (more or less) and that history adds a weight to the story that makes it more timely than when it was first published in the 1965. Denis Villeneuve and others made the smart decision to shift the story from focusing on white savior space Jesus to that of a struggling occupied desert people. The planet of Arrakis is being destroyed to harvest materials to fuel endless wars for an empire. Unlike previous adaptions, reading the novel is not necessary to follow the storyline in this film. Also, it helps that we now live in a post Game of Thrones world, where audiences are used to these science fiction / fantasy intrigue and complicated storylines. Anything that you need to know is told via massive exposition dumps that are delivered to the audience in the many scenes. Exposition is the primary way they set up the story in this movie. This movie adds details not seen in previous adaptions, helping the narrative hang together better for those unfamiliar with the novel. Several changes were made to add action and create tension in an otherwise mostly talking head drama. Unfortunately just as the movie really gets going, it abruptly ends. Not to spoil the movie but only one part of the first novel (six total) is filmed for this movie. Hopefully there is a Part 2 (and more?) soon, so audiences can see the conclusion of this epic sci-fi tale. Don’t let the cliffhanger ending scare you away what we did get in this movie is glorious. This is a risky venture on revamped franchise's first outing to end this movie in a cliffhanger. Are fans going to be left hanging without a conclusion (besides the two other films and the original novel) if this movie doesn't perform in the box office? We shall see, but I am definitely interested in seeing more Dune movies (or big budget TV show) in the future. In some ways it feels allot like Alita Battle Angel all over again.

Dune (2021) is a great beautiful movie. Fans of the novel should be very happy with this movie. If you never read the novel you will still be able to enjoy this epic movie. This film by Denis Villeneuve is by far the best film adaption of Herbert's ecological, political and religious novel. The other two adaptions have their moments, but they truly fall short capturing the epic tale. In closing Dune (2021) is well worth your time.

Final Verdict: 8/10
