How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World 3D Movie Review

This movie looks beautiful in 3D.  It’s not just one scene, but it’s the entire movie that looks fantastic in 3D. This movie and franchise has really embraced 3D and it shows. Objects will fly outward and pop out of the screen. Sometimes objects or dragons will fly from the foreground into the background. Several scenes use 3D depth to showcase height. The 3D never feels gimmicky or silly and is well used throughout the film. One close up scene in a grassy field is especially stunning in 3D as you see all the different blades of grass in different planes of 3D space. The 3D aspect of this movie is a natural aspect of the visual design. Simply put this movie looks wonderful in 3D and I highly recommend it.

This is the third and final How to Train Your Dragon film in the  franchise. It has been almost five years since the previous How to Train Your Dragon movie released. Can this movie live up to the high pedigree of its predecessors and conclude the series in a satisfying manor?

The story begins shortly after the events of the second film. To avoid spoilers I won’t go into much detail in this review. Hiccup is now the leader of the town of Berk. Hiccup’s dragon toothless finds a new potential mate. A new villain character named Grimmel is trying to hunt down all the dragons. Several story components are expertly juggled in this movie . In some ways this movie shares many core plot points of its predecessors. This movie is dependent on you watching the previous two films in this franchise. You might be okay to watch this as a stand-alone film but wouldn’t recommend it. Essentially all the characters of the previous films return in this movie. The movie is gorgeous with many beautiful shots. The dragon animation is truly excellent. Hiccup is a great well developed protagonist, and his friends are very likable too. The character of Astrid is especially strong in this movie. This movie serves as a concluding chapter to the series and is very emotional. The emotional aspect of the movie is part of the story telling and is both deserved and earned. This isn’t just a stupid kids cartoon, it’s far beyond that . This is a fantastic animated movie that both children and adults can enjoy. Overall I really loved the story and found it very compelling even if it felt slightly redundant.

Sadly I had a few issues with this movie that prevent it from being perfect. The movie leaves many questions unanswered. Several new ideas are not fully explored. The villain is interesting but I wanted more backstory for this character. The movie is wackier than I remember the previous films being. Overall the comedy works well, but at times it can be annoying. The final action scene feels anticlimactic with no real stakes. This movie feels a little light in length. I feel like it could have easily been thirty minutes longer. Ultimately the biggest issue is that I didn’t want this movie to end. I love the characters and story so much it’s hard to see this excellent franchise end. I don’t want a forth movie,  spin-offs , prequels or anything like that. I just wanted a little bit more from this already excellent movie.

 

In closing I love this franchise and I loved this movie. The issues I have with it are minor.  If you enjoyed the previous films in the franchise you will definitely love this movie. If you haven’t seen any of the previous How to Train Your Dragon films stop reading this review and go and watch them now . (You will thank me later) I left the theater crying like a baby. Crying because this movie is so beautiful and is well crafted that when it ended it was like loosing a lifelong friend. So far this movie is the best movie released in 2019.  How to Train Your Dragon The Hidden World is a wonderful final movie in the series and is something that you absolutely need to see .

I enjoyed the 3D aspect this movie, but it falls short because it misses too many obvious opportunities to fully realize the 3D effects. For starters, why doesn’t the pop up ads (which is a legitimate part of the story) actually pop out in 3D? The beautifully rendered 3D character designs, especially the Disney princesses, don't really need 3D. At least not the pathetic 3D offered up in this film. The 3D disappoints in the various gaming sequences or the locations within the Internet. The 3D is not terrible, it is fine but it doesn’t wow the eye. Like most big studio animation films, the 3D is good but it doesn’t go the extra mile to be great.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck it Ralph 2 is a strange yet familiar movie. It continues the story of the original Wreck it Ralph movie, but it also serves as a meta commentary on internet pop culture.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck it Ralph 2 (awful title by the way) is set six years after the events of the original movie. In the original Wreck it Ralph movie video game characters come to life after the arcade closed its doors for the night. In this movie the video game character of Vanellope has an existential crisis. Vanellope’s arcade machine needs to be repaired or else she won’t have a place to call her home. Ralph has the brilliant idea to visit the internet (newly installed into the arcade) to help Vanellope repair her arcade machine. In many ways Ralph Breaks the Internet feels like a rehash of the original movie. The story is very fast pace, with many fun twists and turns. The initial premise of the movie is dealt with relatively quickly and the real meat of the story is how the characters deal with the aftermath. The second half of the movie is where the movie goes into the bizarre territory. The movie is very meta and shatters the forth wall with many great jokes. This movie even shatters the self-established rules of its predecessor. It’s difficult to discuss this movie without spoilers because the second half of the movie is so very different than the first half. This movie is not what you think it is.

One of the biggest problems with the movie is the shattering of the preestablished rules of the original. I understand the movie needs to grow and move beyond its roots, but this movie conveniently forgets many key plot points of the original and shatters its own rules. Without well-established rules it’s very difficult to care about what is happening on screen. Clearly defined boundaries must exist to create a fully realized narrative. The internet this movie showcases doesn’t work. The scenario this movie creates is built in a flimsy way. I can only suspend my disbelief so much. This movie is filled to the brim with plot holes and plot conveniences. The commentary the movie has on the internet culture and isolation is very intriguing. I do wish that some of these deeper elements of the story weren’t glossed over but more fully expanded upon. The greatness of this movie is handicapped by all the plot holes. Anything can happen in this story for any reason without any real consequences. I don’t care if this is a ‘cartoon’ it needs to stay somewhat rooted in the reality that it makes for itself. Simply put this movie doesn’t make much sense.

The humor and heart are the two biggest strengths of the movie. I almost legitimately cried during one key moment of this movie. The characters feel authentic and are well written. The sentimental elements of the story are earned and the crisis the characters deal with is genuine. This emotional core is perfectly balanced by the humor in this movie. The laughs come quickly and often. Many jokes are very clever and often subvert the expectations of the viewer. The movie is very entertaining and funny and does a great job of roasting contemporary internet pop culture. I do worry if future generations will understand all the references and internet inside jokes presented in this movie. Unlike The Emoji Movie this movie knows how to do pop culture references without stopping the film to a halt and feeling like a transparent advertisement. The voice acting performances in this movie are top notch. The excellent sense of humor and the strong emotional components work well in this movie.

 

In some ways this movie is pandering to me. I feel very comfortable considering myself a gamer, a film fan and a citizen of the internet pop culture. Maybe I am more critical of this movie because I get all the references. Maybe the casual moviegoers watching this movie won’t be bothered by the plot holes and its contrived narrative. Overall, I enjoyed my time with this movie, but I am also very frustrated by some aspects of the story that kept me from truly loving it.

Small Foot 3D Movie Review

Small Foot like many other previous  3D animated movies has very nice 3D visuals. The 3D highlights many small details such as animal fur and snow flurries. The movie has two airplane sequences that really stand out in 3D. Overall the 3D is well worth the price of admission. The 3D will not amaze you but I can recommend it.

 Small Foot is a 3D animated film about a hidden city of yetis. One of yetis named Migo discovers a human to which they refer to as a “small foot”. Migo is banished from the yeti village because he cannot prove the existence of the small foot. Migo and his friends go on a journey to prove the existence of small foots and regain entry into the yeti society.


Small Footis a surprising movie. The trailers for this movie are fairly deceiving and give the audience a false impression of what to expect from this movie. Never judge a movie by its trailer, because this movie is far better than I expected it to be and it has many surprises. For starters, this movie is a full-blown musical. With the exception of James Cordon's Vanilla Ice-ish cover of the Bowie/Queen song UNDER PRESSURE, the music is pleasantly delightful. Instead of being slapstick adventure the story is about questioning authority. The movie boldly covers the questioning of social norms and explores the ideas of critical thinking.


Small Foot can follow some familiar animated movie tropes but overall it is a nice surprise and something that I can easily recommend.
