3D

I need to warn everyone about the 3D aspect of Venom Let There Be Carnage movie. This might be considered a spoiler, but I have to mention it because I imagine many people might be upset when they watch this movie in 3D. The first act of Venom Let There Be Carnage has some pathetically bad 3D. The  3D is very muted, and the same can be said about the movie’s color palette. In the first act the 3-D is as flat as an early 2000’s 3D conversion. The 3D starts off really bad, but it gets better as the movie progresses. Specifically after a scene happens in Alcatraz, the color palette of the movie brightens up considerably, and the 3D goes deep and pops out into one of the better conversions released in 2021. I feel compelled to warn you since nobody warned me. It’s a pity because I worry that some people may complain to the theaters management that the 3D is awful when the movie begins. How they use 3D in the Alcatraz scene is quite effective. How they turn on the 3D and brighten up the film creates a real wow factor when it finally happens. I think anticipation instead of surprise is the better thing to do in 2021. Venom 2 has incredible pop-outs and many scenes of nice 3D depth. The best 3D sequence would be the Alcatraz scenes and the church sequence even as cliched as these types of church sequences are. All in all, Venom Let There Be Carnage has some very stunning 3D effects.

Final Verdict: Great 3D (At least after the Alcatraz scene)

Movie

Venom Let There Be Carnage is easily an improvement on the original Venom film.

Venom 2 is a lean and mean 90 or so minutes of a movie. No real fat on this film. This review will try to also be lean too. The plot is fairly simple as venom fights his nemesis Carnage. Carnage is another more evil symbiote and is portrayed by the great Woody Harrelson. The movie moves at a breakneck pace and it only slows down to double down on the comedy. Tom Hardy is absolutely hysterical as Eddie Brock / Venom. Their banter will have you chuckling throughout the movie. The direction of this movie by Andy Serkis is fantastic. Serkis’s experience with motion capture is put to good use with all the amazing interactions of Venom and Carnage and with the various characters throughout the film. Most of the supporting cast is back from the first Venom movie, and they actually have better parts in this shorter movie. Wisely, characterization comes before the action within this movie. The action set pieces are more meaningful this time around. It also helps that every one seems to know what kind of movie this is suppose to be in. Venom Let There Be Carnage is 1990s style super-hero action comedy, and camps it up appropriately. FYI Venom Let There Be Carnage has a mid credit scene after the credits start to roll (it's a doozy).

Venom Let There Be Carnage is a superior movie to its predecessor. Venom 2 is a great movie and I highly recommend it.

Final Verdict: 8/10

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 3D Movie Review

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings 3D Movie Review

Written By: Jake Jarvis

3D

Wow is the best word to describe the mind blowing 3D conversion of Shang-Chi. The half a dozen fight scenes look spectacular with many pop outs and great depth. The bus sequence is jaw droopingly beautiful in 3D. The bamboo maze is stunning to see in 3D. The skyscraper action scene in the scaffolding has incredible depth. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a must see in 3D. If you watch this movie in 2D you might loose half of your potential enjoyment of this movie.

Final Verdict:

Great 3D - Editors Choice

Movie

Shang-Chi is one the best hollywood martial arts movies since Enter the Dragon.

I love the excellent cast in this movie. Simu Liu who is best known for his role in the 2016 sitcom Kim's Convenience portrays Shang-Chi. Awkwafina is Katy, the humorous female friend and is sorta the side kick of Shang-Chi. Awkwafina's performance is really good, and it is great seeing her kick ass and be worthy of joining in on the action. Michelle Yeoh is almost wasted this movie as she is given a very small role as Ying Nan. The role of Ying Nan is small, but she makes this small part interesting. Tony Leung portrays Xu Wenwu, the heart and soul of this movie. His tragic arc moves the story forward and gives this film its bite between the fight scenes. The film has a lot of great cameos and small roles from the previous Marvel films. The entire cast is top notch and they work together to build a fantastic narrative.

Shang-Chi is a new exciting corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The fights in Shang-Chi are top notch. Shang Chi is one of the last movies choreographed by the great Brad Allen. Sadly Brad Allen passed away in August of 2021. The martial arts action pops off the screen both visually because of the excellent 3D visuals, and because of the excellent fight choreography.

The story of Shang-Chi is pretty interesting. Shang-Chi is living in modern day San Fransisco and he decides to return to china to investigate a mysterious letter that he received. In china Shang-Chi discovers his mystical heritage. Many of the important scenes are subtitled and take place in flash backs. I loved the story in this film and I don’t want to spoil anything by providing any further details. Please remember to stick around after the film ends for one mid credits and one post credits scene. Both scenes are interesting and set things up for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie both feels like the tried and true Marvel formula and is something new and different.

Shang-Chi delivers in both action and intriguing story. Don’t miss this movie!

Final Verdict: 10/10

Free Guy 3D Movie Review

Free Guy

3D Movie Review

Written By: Jake Jarvis

3D

A lot of opportunities were missed with the 3D effects of Free Guy, which is a damn shame. Several potential pop outs were shot with the wrong camera angle limiting any visual impact that it should have achieved. There is good 3D depth, but with all the dazzling action sequences there should have been many more 3d pop outs. The 3D really didn't add much extra to the viewing experience, but it is enjoyable. Sadly Free Guy doesn’t fully live up to to its 3D potential, but it is enjoyable enough to recommend.

Final Verdict: Good 3D

Movie

Hollywood, so far, hasn't made a decent film directly based on a video game, but they have created many good to great movies based on gaming. Free Guy is a one of the great Hollywood films based on gaming.

The plot is dual fold with one plot being set in the real world and the other plot being set within the virtual world. Both plots intermix and are dependent on other. Sadly, the ‘real world’ plot for Free Guy is cliched. Basically it's the story of a boy who falls for his dream girl and his entire world changes. Video game wise its basically, Grand Theft Auto meets Fortnite with maybe some Sims mixed in. Ryan Reynolds is “Guy” a bank teller character within the open world video game of Free City. Guy’s life is transformed as he learns that he is living within a video game. There is massive amounts of pandering to a geek audience and it works well. Frankly this movie will have you geeking out. It’s not the premise, but the execution that makes Free Guy an interesting and enjoyable film.

Free Guy is a 180 degree turn from Deadpool 's raunchy comedy and its every bit as funny, even with its PG-13 rating. There are a couple of surprise hilarious cameos that are way too good to spoil. Dozens of great performances make this movie really enjoyable. Ryan Reynolds is simply a joy to watch on screen. Taika Waititi is hilariously ridiculous as Antoine a toxic game developer CEO. Joe Keery is great as Keys, the hopelessly romantic hacker. I liked all the characters in this movie. The stand out performance is that of Lil Rel  Howery as Buddy. Buddy is Guy's best friend, and he steals the movie. The buddy character is essentially a reference to almost every buddy role of Kevin Hart’s career. Overall the comedy works well and the characters are very likable in Free Guy.

Free Guy takes awhile to get everything setup, but then moves at a very rapid pace with plenty of action and laughs along the way. Alas, Free Guy has no post credit scene, but you will enjoy this movie from beginning to end. Some parts of the movie are cliche, but in closing I had lots of fun watching this movie. Free Guy is well worth watching on the big screen.

Final Verdict: 8/10
